Talking Birds

Established in 1992, Talking Birds is a Midlands based Theatre Company that developed the first prototype for the Difference Engine captioning tool in 2010. This was initially for their own work, as a way to give more people the chance to access the experimental, outdoor and small-scale work that they were producing.

The Difference Engine is a tool that is now hired to companies across the UK, helping make performances and events accessible to D/deaf or hard-of-hearing by delivering captions directly to the users own mobile devices via a free app. (Talking Birds are also working on providing audio description to make events accessible to blind or partially sighted audiences too).

Talking Birds aspire to make Art for Good, which they define as work that responds to the times in which we live; helps develop and promote empathy, human connection, social and ecological responsibility, and international understanding; and nurtures, supports and helps develop the next generation of artists and theatre makers.
