This involves providing different \u2018ways in\u2019 to the work you create, present, or programme, ensuring it\u2019s accessible to people who engage in various ways. For example, using <\/span><span title=\"British Sign Language\" data-definition-name=\"British Sign Language\" data-definition=\"british-sign-language\" data-definition-id=\"4317\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> (BSL) <span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">or <\/span><span title=\"Irish Sign Language\" data-definition-name=\"Irish Sign Language\" data-definition=\"irish-sign-language\" data-definition-id=\"4318\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"> (ISL), <\/span><span title=\"Captions\" data-definition-name=\"Captions\" data-definition=\"captions\" data-definition-id=\"4323\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">, or engaging primarily through touch or sound. It can also mean adapting the environment so that individuals can participate in a manner that feels natural to them, manage their sensory needs, or reduce the risk of infection. Offering hybrid events allows people to engage from home or bed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Access provisions for your audiences may be built into a project from the beginning, making them available every day or at every show (this is sometimes referred to as <span data-definition=\"integrated-access\" data-definition-id=\"4398\" title=\"Integrated access\" data-definition-name=\"Integrated access\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>). Even better, they might be creatively woven into the work so that they are a seamless part of the experience. This is sometimes called <span data-definition=\"creative-access\" data-definition-id=\"4340\" title=\"Creative access\" data-definition-name=\"Creative access\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. There may also be access provisions available on specific days, at designated times, or for select performances. These opportunities are sometimes called <span data-definition=\"adapted-performances-and-presentations\" data-definition-id=\"5118\" title=\"Adapted performances and presentations\" data-definition-name=\"Adapted performances and presentations\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or access performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure that you provide a variety of options throughout your programme. It typically describes visual elements such as costumes, sets, facial expressions, body language, movement, physical features of people or objects, artworks, or environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Audio description is often provided live through a headset for theatre or event audiences. They are languages that have their own grammar, structure and syntax that are different from English. It\u2019s important to remember that not all deaf and hard of hearing people will use sign language. <span data-definition=\"sign-language-interpreter\" data-definition-id=\"4857\" title=\"Sign language interpreters\" data-definition-name=\"Sign language interpreters\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> are professionals who facilitate communication between deaf sign language users and hearing people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some examples of using <span data-definition=\"sign-language-interpretation\" data-definition-id=\"4829\" title=\"Sign language interpretation\" data-definition-name=\"Sign language interpretation\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> to provide access to creative and cultural experiences include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>work that is created in sign language, then interpreted into English, either live in the space or as a voice-over or text <span data-definition=\"captions\" data-definition-id=\"4323\" title=\"Captions\" data-definition-name=\"Captions\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a sign language version of spoken narrative that is delivered by deaf performer(s) within a larger cast or by a deaf presenter\/character (including video elements of an exhibition or installation)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a sign language translation of spoken narrative created by an interpreter or BSL or ISL consultant and delivered by an interpreter or a deaf performer, usually called a <span data-definition=\"bsl-isl-interpreted\" data-definition-id=\"4319\" title=\"BSL\/ISL interpreted\" data-definition-name=\"BSL\/ISL interpreted\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> offer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a live, in-person or pre-recorded BSL or ISL-led experience (or a gallery tour)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are creating a sign language interpreted offer or developing a script that includes sign language users, an interpreter and deaf consultant will translate the spoken narrative and other important sound elements into sign language. It is used by some deaf and hard of hearing people. It can also be useful for neurodivergent people, and people using a second or additional language.
