Equity means ensuring they have a supported and enabling experience throughout the entire creative process. This includes input on timelines, access measures, budgets, and collaboration styles. Once commissioned, disabled artists need the same authority and creative freedom as their non-disabled peers. The experience should be inclusive, well-resourced, and enabling at every stage. This allows disabled artists or organisations to influence the terms of the commission, such as timelines, deliverables, and methods of working. Ensure you can meet the access needs of the people producing the creative and cultural work. You need to implement <span title=\"Reasonable adjustments\" data-definition-name=\"Reasonable adjustments\" data-definition=\"reasonable-adjustments\" data-definition-id=\"3614\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> for disabled artists and professionals as required by the <span title=\"Equality Act (2010)\" data-definition-name=\"Equality Act (2010)\" data-definition=\"equality-act-2010\" data-definition-id=\"3611\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, and you should aim to go beyond this Standard whenever possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For further information, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/creative-and-cultural-experiences\/working-with-artists\/accessible-working-practices\/\">Creative and Cultural Experiences 3.03 Accessible Working Practices<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Budget requirements<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While some artists and professionals may receive support through the government\u2019s <span title=\"Access to Work\" data-definition-name=\"Access to Work\" data-definition=\"access-to-work\" data-definition-id=\"4287\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> scheme (UK) or <span title=\"Work and Access\" data-definition-name=\"Work and Access\" data-definition=\"work-and-access\" data-definition-id=\"4288\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> (Ireland), do not assume that all disabled artists and professionals get this support or that it will be available or sufficient for your project. Always set aside specific funds for access support such as sign language interpreters, personal assistants, access consultants, and flexible working arrangements. For more about this, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/creative-and-cultural-experiences\/strategic-commitment\/budgeting-for-access\/\">Creative and Cultural Experiences 1.04 Budgeting for Access<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Disabled voices and narratives<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Support disabled artists and organisations to lead the creative vision. Avoid altering concepts or narratives to fit non-disabled audiences or expectations. When callouts and opportunities are disability-focused, ensure they promote innovative, challenging, critical, and diverse work from multiple viewpoints, and do not reinforce stereotypes about disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Ownership of projects<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure that artists and makers retain full intellectual property rights and copyright ownership of their work, including the right to control how it is used, reproduced, adapted, and shared, both during and after the commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Training<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disabled artists should not be expected to deliver access or disability equality training, access consultancy or advice unless separately and explicitly contracted to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Process adaptation &amp; accessible formats<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ace-image content-image alt-block\"><figure class=\"fill block-image alt-block\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ACE-All-In-2285-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Person in a wheelchair in front of a wooden sculpture displayed on a white pedestal in a gallery setting. For instance, this might involve making the project timeline more flexible or rescheduling the project altogether for learning-disabled artists or booking private rehearsal spaces due to someone\u2019s COVID precautions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the creative process, ensure that any documentation is in the most accessible format for the person or organisation you are working with.\u202fBe prepared to create accessible formats of key documents for the project. See <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/customer-service\/planning-a-visit\/information-formats\/\">Customer Service 1.02 Information Formats<\/a> for more about making information accessible.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Appropriate resourcing<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artists must be properly resourced in all aspects of their engagement. This includes providing fair payment that reflects their time, expertise, and creative effort, rather than just the final product. It&#8217;s important to adopt a flexible approach to payment for commissioned or programmed projects, as not everyone may be able to accept monetary compensation. Materials and production costs should be covered without expecting artists to subsidise their work. Travel and accommodation must be accessible and safe, and consideration should be given to fully or partially funding these. It says that businesses and organisations must remove access barriers and make \u2018reasonable adjustments\u2019 so that disabled people and others can take part equally.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Large print<\/h4><div><p>Large print is defined by the RNIB as being 16pt Arial or bigger. You should not refer to a document as being large print unless it conforms with this standard.
