They give any artist a chance to be noticed by an organisation. This is especially valuable for disabled artists who face barriers in education or career paths, or who follow non-traditional routes into the creative industries. Open calls allow disabled artists to choose when, how, and to whom they apply, rather than waiting for an invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open calls can be crucial in giving new voices a chance to create experiences and tell stories. This leads to richer and more diverse offerings for audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based best practices and lived experience, the Open Calls Standard makes sure that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>your open call information is accessible and reaches disabled people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your open call reflects the different ways people may have come into their artistic career and the stage they have reached<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your open call process is efficient and doesn\u2019t ask for a lot of unpaid labour in the early stages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you are being transparent about who your open calls reach and who gets opportunities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more about finding and selecting work through commissioning and programming, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/creative-and-cultural-experiences\/access-to-opportunities\/finding-and-selecting-work\/\">Creative and Cultural Experiences&nbsp;2.01 Finding and Selecting Work<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more about accessible ways of applying for opportunities, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/creative-and-cultural-experiences\/access-to-opportunities\/access-to-opportunities\/\">Creative and Cultural Experiences 2.02 Access to Opportunities<\/a>. Reach out to local organisations for disabled people, <span data-definition=\"deaf-clubs\" data-definition-id=\"6403\" title=\"Deaf clubs\" data-definition-name=\"Deaf clubs\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, and community arts organisations to connect with artists who might otherwise be overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Flexibility around criteria<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An open call is typically an opportunity accessible to anyone, sometimes with conditions like being based in a specific geographic area. They can be very helpful for people with nontraditional careers to find space, time, or funding to create or deliver work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reflect on whether you really need to set definitions like \u2018career stage\u2019 or impose restrictions such as age limits for certain opportunities. Keep in mind that disabled artists are more likely to have faced barriers to education or employment early in life. Many disabled creatives may have built their careers at a different pace or via unconventional pathways compared to non-disabled people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Streamlined processes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep your application process simple and efficient, especially at the start. For example, consider using a brief \u201cexpression of interest\u201d where applicants can outline their project initially. Use this to shortlist artists for the next stage, which involves a more detailed application. This ensures that disabled artists aren\u2019t required to invest significant time, energy, or access support in the application process until they are shortlisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Compensating and supporting shortlisted artists<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compensate shortlisted artists for their work on developing a full application whenever possible. This is particularly important for disabled artists who may be committing limited resources, such as energy and access support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Offer a range of support for shortlisted artists, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>information sessions or access to a named contact for queries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>offer to cover access costs for support needed to work on their application<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide detailed feedback and signpost unsuccessful artists to other opportunities, or offer a letter of support for their project<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure that you budget to provide access support to the shortlisted artists and have considered how you will support and fund the access needs of the selected artists. Don\u2019t assume that disabled artists will always have <span data-definition=\"access-to-work\" data-definition-id=\"4287\" title=\"Access to Work\" data-definition-name=\"Access to Work\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> (UK) or <span data-definition=\"work-and-access\" data-definition-id=\"4288\" title=\"Work and Access\" data-definition-name=\"Work and Access\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>(Ireland) funding to allocate to your project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Data and reporting<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collect and analyse data at all stages of the process to understand how many disabled artists have submitted expressions of interest, how many were shortlisted, and how many were successful. You should report on this publicly. Ensure that you genuinely engage with disabled artists and program or commission them throughout the year, rather than solely during disability-focused seasons, programmes, or events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use this data to identify any gaps in who responds to your <span data-definition=\"open-calls\" data-definition-id=\"5259\" title=\"Open calls\" data-definition-name=\"Open calls\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. Is there a group of disabled people you are consistently missing, or are disabled people getting shortlisted but not selected? Ask yourself what changes you can make to your open call process and decision-making procedures to address this.
