This creates more opportunities for disabled people to develop the experiences they wish to showcase. It also offers audiences more chances to engage with work by disabled artists and encounter genuine representation of disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/creative-and-cultural-experiences\/access-to-opportunities\/finding-and-selecting-work\/\">Creative and Cultural&nbsp;Experiences&nbsp;2.01 Finding and Selecting Work<\/a> focuses on including disabled makers and organisations in your <span title=\"Commissioning\" data-definition-name=\"Commissioning\" data-definition=\"commissioning\" data-definition-id=\"4332\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>and <span title=\"Programming\" data-definition-name=\"Programming\" data-definition=\"programming\" data-definition-id=\"4442\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>efforts. This Standard highlights the methods people will use to <strong>learn about and apply for<\/strong> these opportunities. It is helpful to read these two Standards together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When planning to programme disabled artists and companies, ensure they can easily discover opportunities for commissioning or programming with your organisation. Provide question prompts or examples of how people should respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explain the timeline for the application process including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>when people need to apply by<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>when people will next hear from you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>when people will find out if they are successful<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what are the key dates for working with you if they are chosen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Language<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use <span title=\"Plain English\" data-definition-name=\"Plain English\" data-definition=\"plain-english\" data-definition-id=\"4438\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> and don\u2019t use jargon or \u2018arts speak\u2019. This will help everyone understand what you are looking for and how they can respond. Refer to applicants as \u2018you\u2019 and your organisation or venue as \u2018we\u2019. Use the <span data-definition=\"active-voice\" data-definition-id=\"4301\" title=\"Active voice\" data-definition-name=\"Active voice\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> wherever possible. For example, you should say \u201cyou can send us a video to tell us about your work\u201d rather than \u201capplicants should submit a video outlining their practice\u201d. Ensure that the language you use considers <span data-definition=\"intersecting-identities\" data-definition-id=\"3613\" title=\"Intersecting identities\" data-definition-name=\"Intersecting identities\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, for example, by offering people the opportunity to share their pronouns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Explaining your organisation\u2019s culture<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Share clear, easily understandable information to help creatives grasp your organisation\u2019s approach and methods, particularly regarding working with disabled people and promoting wider equity and inclusion. This will assist disabled creatives in deciding whether they would feel confident about being included and having their needs met if they collaborate with you. It will also help people decide if this is the right opportunity for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might include information about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>your organisation\u2019s culture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>who is in your team and their backgrounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your ways of working<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your ambitions for equity and inclusion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your approach to talent development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Transparency about the selection process<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be honest about how the selection process for the opportunity will work and what you can realistically offer to applicants. For example, if you can\u2019t provide detailed feedback to everyone or you won\u2019t notify unsuccessful candidates, say so. Use clear language to prevent misunderstandings, such as by stating \u201cWe will email everyone whose work has been chosen by [date]. If you have not received an email by [date], it means your project has not been selected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If possible, inform applicants approximately how many applications you expect to receive and how many projects you intend to select. Don\u2019t ask for anything that you don\u2019t genuinely need or will not use in your decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Accessible formats<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure that details about your opportunity and the application process are easily accessible. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>check that your documents and web pages meet accessibility guidelines, for example, they work well with screen readers (see <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/digital-communications\/monitoring-and-continuous-improvement\/adopting-web-content-accessibility-guidelines-wcag\/\">Digital Communications 6.03 Adopting Web Content Accessibility Guidelines<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide key information in alternative formats such as a sign language video of the information, an <span title=\"Easy Read\" data-definition-name=\"Easy Read\" data-definition=\"easy-read\" data-definition-id=\"4354\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> version and an audio version (see <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/customer-service\/planning-a-visit\/information-formats\/\">Customer Service 1.02 Information Formats<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>offer a variety of ways for people to respond, such as filling out a written form or recording a video or audio clip (ensure to set word or time limits for these) so they can choose what is most accessible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>check your processes and information with disabled people to make sure they work for users.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Time<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allow sufficient time in the process to ensure you can reach disabled artists, including those who may face barriers to discovering opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allow ample time for people to apply. This also enables you to be flexible in providing access support during the process, answering questions, or offering information sessions for applicants. Incorporate some extra time at the end of the process once all applications are received, so you can respond to anything unexpected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Value the unpaid effort people invest in applying for your opportunity. If possible, cover access costs or offer other forms of support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Access to support<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Offer as much support as is reasonable for an organisation of your size, scale and budget to do. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>budget to provide access support for applicants, such as a <span title=\"Sign language interpreter\" data-definition-name=\"Sign language interpreter\" data-definition=\"sign-language-interpreter-2\" data-definition-id=\"5114\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or <span data-definition=\"captioner-2\" data-definition-id=\"5248\" title=\"Captioner\" data-definition-name=\"Captioner\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>for information sessions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>offer to pay people\u2019s individual access costs, as well as planning to provide key things yourselves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>make sure there is an accessible way to contact a named person in your organisation with questions or access requests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>consider what support you can offer to people who aren\u2019t successful, for example signposting or a letter of support for their project<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Evaluation and feedback<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure there is a way for people to contact you with feedback about the accessibility of your opportunity. Be explicit that you genuinely want to know what works and what doesn\u2019t for people. Make sure people understand that sharing negative experiences won\u2019t affect their relationship with your organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evaluate the process yourself, including tracking how many disabled artists applied and reached the selection stage. Ensure that any necessary changes for future instances are implemented. This is usually clearer than passive voice, where the subject receives the action: &#8216;The email was sent by the team&#8217;.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Captioner<\/h4><div><p>Captioning is a text display of the spoken words and important sound elements of a performance or video. This is usually shown on a screen or caption unit, or integrated into the set so that people can follow along. Captions can be delivered by a captioner in the venue, or remotely. Captions can be pre-scripted or produced live depending on the type of event<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Commissioning<\/h4><div><p>When an organisation asks an artist or company to create a new piece of work, often for a particular project, event or space.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Criteria<\/h4><div><p>The things that an organisation is looking for when they choose which experiences to commission or programme. For example, criteria might be about the quality of the work, how it connects to a theme or idea, or whether it will be interesting for their audience.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Disabled-led organisations<\/h4><div><p>An organisation where disabled people are represented at decision-making level (for example, as Artistic Director, Chief Executive or Trustee). When at least 51% of the senior management team and board identify as disabled. Usually guided by lived experience of disabled people and centre disabled perspectives.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Easy Read<\/h4><div><p>An alternative version of written information that uses simple words and pictures to help someone understand. Easy Read is often used by people with a Learning Disability.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Intersecting identities<\/h4><div><p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW100197856 BCX0\">This means when someone has multiple marginalised identities or protected characteristics under the Equality Act (e.g. race, gender, age, sexual orientation) that overlap, influence <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW100197856 BCX0\">each other<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW100197856 BCX0\"> and shape the person\u2019s lived experience in unique ways<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Plain English<\/h4><div><p>A way of writing or speaking that is clear and simple and avoids jargon and hard words. Plain English or plain language helps everyone to understand information the first time they read it or hear it.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Programming<\/h4><div><p>When an organisation like a theatre, a gallery or a festival chooses which shows, events or performances will happen in their space or at their event, and when they will happen.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Sign language interpreter<\/h4><div><p>Sign language interpretation is translation of the spoken and sound elements of an experience to British or Irish Sign Language. It can be delivered by a sign language interpreter located apart from the main action (for example at the side of the stage, on a separate screen, on video accessed by QR code signage) or by signing
