You should also communicate clearly and accessibly about the type of work you want, your selection process, and how they can submit their work for consideration. These strategies will build trust, showing that your organisation welcomes makers and supports their access needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is helpful to think about the spaces where deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent creators, or others with accessibility needs, are already creating and showcasing their work, and visit these spaces. This means going to venues with better physical or sensory access. You can also attend events hosted by these creators, which focus on promoting talent from the disabled community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are collectives of writers, designers, and curators dedicated to accessibility. In addition to one-off visits to shows or exhibits, building partnerships with relevant organisations can be effective. For example, attending a collective\u2019s yearly showcase can help you find new talent for commissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are a receiving organisation, you may visit disability-focused festivals or seasons to find work that aligns with your programme. Make your physical venues and formats, like your website and social media, accessible to a broad range of potential collaborators or applicants. Be clear about the access facilities and barriers your venue has, as well as the access support you routinely provide. For example, whether you focus on internationally or nationally known makers. Or if you have a local or regional focus. Also, be clear on how important it is that the work is commercially viable and makes a profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have specific criteria around disabled-led and disability focused work, communicate these clearly too. For example, describe how you define &#8216;disabled-led&#8217; within your organisation, and whether you prioritise work that features disabled people as characters or tells stories about them. See <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/creative-and-cultural-experiences\/strategic-commitment\/organisational-approach\/\">Creative and Cultural Experiences 1.01 Organisational Approach<\/a> for more guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Describe who is involved in choosing the work, when they do so, and how it happens. Include approximate timescales, such as \u201cwe hold a selection panel 4 times a year in January, April, September, and December.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Describe the usual scoring or selection criteria you apply, and the balancing factors that decision-makers will consider, such as the financial viability of the project, its environmental sustainability, or how it benefits audience groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explain whether people can contact you for consideration and how they should do so. For example, via email, by submitting a tour pack, or by booking a chat with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure you communicate this in <span title=\"Plain language\" data-definition-name=\"Plain language\" data-definition=\"plain-language\" data-definition-id=\"5116\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> and accessible formats. Be honest about how quickly you can respond and the level of feedback you can offer. If possible, share direct feedback with applicants in a format that is accessible to them. Consider additional ways to support and build capacity among disabled makers in your network, such as pointing people towards further opportunities if they are unsuccessful or offering mentoring sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Reducing bias<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether the main theme of the work is disability-related or something entirely different, work by creatives who encounter access barriers can feel fresh and disruptive compared to those who are better represented. For creative and cultural work, some degree of subjectivity (feelings-based decision making) and personal taste is important, but there are additional ways to evaluate a work\u2019s quality. Having a clear selection process, such as a checklist of qualities compiled before reviewing the applications, can help reduce any natural <span data-definition=\"bias\" data-definition-id=\"4315\" title=\"Bias\" data-definition-name=\"Bias\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>towards what\u2019s familiar or comfortable. These qualities would be pre-agreed as markers of creative quality or other relevant criteria. However, it\u2019s important not to rely solely on this as the only tool for fostering diversity. Decision-making groups are typically quite small, and individuals can be influenced by societal pressures such as <span title=\"Internalised ableism\" data-definition-name=\"Internalised ableism\" data-definition=\"internalised-ableism\" data-definition-id=\"4401\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or learned bias. Do not assume that members with lived experience of disability will automatically possess insight into various disabled experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should use anti-bias tools to help decision makers choose fairly. Just like with any other candidate, start with a blank slate, assuming you know nothing about the person, and let the application speak for itself. Ensure that your decision-making group considers applications without fixating on someone\u2019s access requirements. The individual will be able to discuss and decide on any necessary adaptations once a commission is awarded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Quality of work<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure that quality remains central to decision-making. Consider which platform suits each individual project best. You might be able to redirect an applicant to another strand of your organisation\u2019s project funding that better matches their level or scale. For instance, support for developmental work can include mentoring, presenting it as part of a &#8216;work-in-progress&#8217; or &#8216;upcoming&#8217; platform, or showcasing it in a smaller studio space. It is more beneficial to invest in development schemes that help applicants bring their work up to standard than to display projects that are still underdeveloped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Widening your audience<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One goal of <span data-definition=\"programming\" data-definition-id=\"4442\" title=\"Programming\" data-definition-name=\"Programming\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>a broader range of experiences from diverse makers is to attract new audiences with different interests and priorities. Instead of asking \u201cIs this right for our audience?\u201d, consider whether a piece of work can help you connect with a different audience. Ensure you reflect this in your marketing plan so that you communicate the experience effectively to both new and existing audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Disability-focused work<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside work by disabled makers on any theme, it&#8217;s important to consider how you find and select work that is explicitly about disability or access. This type of work should ideally be led by disabled artists, or at the very least, co-created with disabled people. This helps to prevent presenting work that doesn&#8217;t reflect the lived experience of disabled individuals or perpetuates harmful stereotypes. Your approach to this should be part of your artistic policy (refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/creative-and-cultural-experiences\/strategic-commitment\/organisational-approach\/\">Creative and Cultural Experiences 1.01 Organisational Approach<\/a>). You should also ensure that those responsible for finding and selecting work for your organisation fully understand the rationale behind your organisational approach once it is
