For example, the audio track from a video can also work as an audio flyer. Budget for alternative accessible formats when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that not everyone who needs accessible information identifies as disabled. Don\u2019t limit your accessible content to an \u2018accessibility\u2019 page. Accessible formats benefit everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Inclusive language and practice<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consult with disabled people when you are planning your accessible communications. Make sure that you pay people for their time and expertise. This ensures you use language related to disability and access that your audience prefers. Use an active voice, like \u201cwe made the show\u201d instead of \u201cthe show was made by us.\u201d Keep sentences short and straightforward. Focus on one topic per paragraph. Avoid jargon and complex words. This style is easier for everyone to understand. It\u2019s useful to note that more than 7 million adults in the UK read at or below the level of a 9-year-old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more guidance see <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/digital-communications\/content-usability\/plain-language-and-readability\/\">Digital Communications 2.01 Plain Language and Readability<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Easy Read information<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-definition=\"easy-read\" data-definition-id=\"4354\" title=\"Easy Read\" data-definition-name=\"Easy Read\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> uses simple, short sentences and pictures. It\u2019s a way of making information accessible for people with Learning Disabilities, but it is useful for many other people too. For example, people who benefit from memory aids, or people under stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should aim to make everything available in a way that\u2019s accessible to everyone. If you must choose, prioritise the most important information in Easy Read. Include details like how to book, how to join your access scheme, and key information about planning a visit and finding the venue. Consider asking people in your audience who use Easy Read what they find most helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plan your Easy Read resources from the beginning of your marketing campaign. Decide what are the most important things to tell people and the main things that you want people to be able to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can produce your own Easy Read materials, but there are also specialist organisations that can do this for you if you have the budget. This makes the text readable for most people. Sans-serif fonts have clear letters without flicks or lines on the ends of the letters. If you need a serif font for a short heading, use a sans-serif font for longer text to keep it readable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be aware that letter sizes can differ between fonts. A 12pt character isn\u2019t the same in every font. For example, Arial and Verdana letters are larger than those in Times New Roman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use sentence case. Writing in all capital letters is harder for many people to read. Use bold for emphasis instead of italics or colour highlighting. This is easier to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure there is sufficient colour contrast between the text and the background. Use a single-coloured background rather than a multicoloured or patterned one. Don\u2019t overlay text onto images because this makes it harder to read the words. If you must do this, place your text in an area where it is overlaid on a solid-coloured background. For example, a solid blue sky with enough colour contras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is harder to read on glossy paper, and when colour is showing through from the previous page. Choose heavier, matte paper of 200gsm or more to avoid this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Large print<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Create a <span data-definition=\"large-print\" data-definition-id=\"4405\" title=\"Large print\" data-definition-name=\"Large print\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> version of key information during your usual production process. This is an alternative accessible format that benefits lots of people, including those with low vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Text should be at least 16-18pt in a <span data-definition=\"sans-serif\" data-definition-id=\"4461\" title=\"Sans serif\" data-definition-name=\"Sans serif\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> font. Don\u2019t use italics or highlighting in large print information, as this makes it harder to read. You can provide Large Print resources as a hard copy or as a downloadable Word document. You can also offer a version in 24pt text. You can get information transcribed into Braille through organisations like the RNIB. Consider offering a Braille <span data-definition=\"transcript\" data-definition-id=\"4496\" title=\"Transcript\" data-definition-name=\"Transcript\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>on request. Make sure people can easily contact you to ask for this service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Audio information<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many blind and partially sighted people prefer audio versions of information. You can record event listings or directions to your venue and embed them on your website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start your recording with a clear summary of the content. Break longer information into chapters or separate files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, provide a <span data-definition=\"transcript\" data-definition-id=\"4496\" title=\"Transcript\" data-definition-name=\"Transcript\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>of the recording. You can offer this as a text or Word download or make it viewable as accessible <span data-definition=\"html\" data-definition-id=\"4389\" title=\"HTML\" data-definition-name=\"HTML\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. Automated transcription tools can help create transcripts, which you can then edit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Audio described information<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-definition=\"audio-description\" data-definition-id=\"4310\" title=\"Audio description\" data-definition-name=\"Audio description\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> provides blind people with additional information about the visual context of things, such as videos. You should budget for this and work with a professional <span data-definition=\"audio-describer-2\" data-definition-id=\"5112\" title=\"Audio describer\" data-definition-name=\"Audio describer\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> when necessary. For shorter pieces of marketing material, it may be more useful to create an audio-led alternative (as described above).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider adding descriptive details and visual context to the script of your video as you create it. If you are adding audio description, you can do so as a separate audio track or integrate it with the video, depending on your platform and audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more information about this, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/digital-communications\/content-usability\/video-content\/\">Digital Communications 2.05 Video, Captions and Audio Descriptions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Captioned information<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All pre-recorded videos you make should include <span data-definition=\"closed-captions\" data-definition-id=\"4328\" title=\"Closed captions\" data-definition-name=\"Closed captions\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure that you position the <span data-definition=\"captions\" data-definition-id=\"4323\" title=\"Captions\" data-definition-name=\"Captions\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>on your video so that they don\u2019t obscure too much of the main video content. Each caption should be two lines long or less. Each caption should stay on screen for at least one second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Captions should describe relevant sound effects, special effects, audience noise, music and lyrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should provide a <span data-definition=\"transcript\" data-definition-id=\"4496\" title=\"Transcript\" data-definition-name=\"Transcript\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>alongside your captioned video. Automated transcription tools can help create transcripts, which you can then edit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more information about this, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/digital-communications\/content-usability\/video-content\/\">Digital Communications 2.05 Video, Captions and Audio Descriptions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">BSL and ISL information<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should provide key information about your venue and information about your creative or cultural offer in <span data-definition=\"british-sign-language\" data-definition-id=\"4317\" title=\"British Sign Language\" data-definition-name=\"British Sign Language\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or <span data-definition=\"irish-sign-language\" data-definition-id=\"4318\" title=\"Irish Sign Language\" data-definition-name=\"Irish Sign Language\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> (BSL\/ISL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should budget for producing information in BSL\/ISL and plan this as part of your marketing campaign so that the information is available for BSL\/ISL users at the same time as non-BSL\/ISL users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work with your local <span title=\"Deaf community\" data-definition-name=\"Deaf community\" data-definition=\"deaf-community\" data-definition-id=\"6402\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, like a <span data-definition=\"deaf-club\" data-definition-id=\"6412\" title=\"Deaf club\" data-definition-name=\"Deaf club\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or centre, to create and share information in BSL\/ISL. Remember, BSL\/ISL uses different grammar to spoken English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might not be able to translate key messages directly into BSL\/ISL. Focus on providing <span title=\"Sign language interpreted\" data-definition-name=\"Sign language interpreted\" data-definition=\"sign-language-interpreted\" data-definition-id=\"5424\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> information for events with BSL\/ISL interpretation or led by BSL\/ISL users. Also, target highly visual or cultural events that will connect with your local Deaf community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hire deaf consultants and use deaf presenters for information delivered in BSL\/ISL, such as presenting a <span data-definition=\"sign-language-flyer\" data-definition-id=\"4471\" title=\"Sign language flyer\" data-definition-name=\"Sign language flyer\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember, written or captioned information isn&#8217;t always helpful for BSL\/ISL users. Closed captions can be switched on or off, meaning that people who don\u2019t require captions can switch them off.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Deaf club<\/h4><div><p>These are community spaces where deaf people use sign language (like BSL or ISL) as the primary way of communicating. They are hubs to bridge social connections, cultural exchange and create a strong sense of belonging.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Deaf community<\/h4><div><p>There is a diverse society of people who experience deafness, hearing loss, or other hearing differences. Many people identify as belonging to the Deaf community, with shared cultural experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Deaf community generally view deafness as part of their cultural identity, and a way of experiencing the world. This contrasts with the medical model. It uses tags to format text, embed images, create links, and organize web pages for browsers to display.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Identity-first language<\/h4><div><p>This is a way of talking about disability that emphasises how disability is an integral part of someone\u2019s identity and lived experience. For example, identity-first language would refer to \u2018a disabled person\u2019 or \u2018an autistic person\u2019 rather than \u2018a person with a disability\u2019 or \u2018a person with autism\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Irish Sign Language<\/h4><div><p>Irish Sign Language (ISL) is a visual language used by the Deaf community in Ireland.
