These spaces support different restorative activities. This Standard addresses the following spaces:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>rest areas, including waiting or \u2018in-between&#8217; spaces in corridors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>prayer or reflection rooms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>first aid area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>outdoor rest spaces and smoking areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Standard is based on the key principles of<span title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> and <span data-definition=\"bs8300\" data-definition-id=\"3603\" title=\"BS8300\" data-definition-name=\"BS8300\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. The lighting is gentle, and there is a screen to create privacy.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"key_considerations\" class=\"wp-block-ace-standard-key-considerations standard-key-considerations standard-content\"><h3>Key considerations<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">General<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All rooms and spaces in a venue should meet the general requirements of the Built Environment Standards, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/flooring-and-wall-surfaces\/\">Built Environment 3.02 Flooring and Wall Surfaces<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/lighting-and-contrast\/\">Built Environment 3.03 Lighting and Contrast<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/artistic-environments\/seating\/\">Built Environment 4.01 Seating<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure that spaces are reachable by accessible pathways from reception, auditoria, or exhibition spaces, as described in <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/access-routes\/\">Built Environment 3.05 Access Routes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feature rooms, like prayer and first aid rooms, should be easy to find. They must be well signposted from other areas so visitors can locate them quickly. Please refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/signage-and-wayfinding\/\">Built Environment 3.01 Signage and Wayfinding<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Rest spaces<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rest is essential for people to manage health conditions or access needs. When planning rest spaces, think about both the physical and mental aspects of rest. For example, some visitors might benefit from seating midway along a corridor, while others might need quieter, more private areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure that seating in corridors and walkways does not block access routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Create comfortable seating areas with different seating options. Some individuals require backrests, armrests, or other features for independent use. Refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/artistic-environments\/seating\/\">Built Environment 4.01 Seating<\/a> for more information on the different types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Built Environment Standards emphasise physical layout. For more information on equipping and managing rest spaces, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/customer-service\/during-a-visit\/assistive-aids-and-equipment\/\">Customer Service 2.05 Assistive Aids and Equipment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Prayer rooms<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prayer and reflection spaces need accessible seating options. Refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/artistic-environments\/seating\/\">Built Environment 4.01 Seating<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consideration should be made for accessible handwashing. Ideally, prayer rooms or multi-faith spaces should be near an accessible bathroom. If this isn&#8217;t possible, provide signs to direct visitors to the nearest one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where <span title=\"Ablution\" data-definition-name=\"Ablution\" data-definition=\"ablution\" data-definition-id=\"8603\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> facilities for washing the feet or body are not available, consider an alternative depending on need. For example, a portable unit, or a personal bidet vending machine. The unit should be placed on slip resistance flooring to prevent slips. The floor of a faith room should be anti-bacterial and mould resistant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place amenities like books and mats within easy reach from a lower height, suitable for wheelchair users. If shoe storage or lockers are provided, they should be at an accessible height or offer different height options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any folding privacy screens provided should be lightweight and easy for visitors to move without help, including those with limited strength. They should also be sturdy enough to stay upright if bumped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talk to regular users of your prayer and reflection space about their needs. Some prayer spaces have grab rails to help visitors get up and down from a kneeling position. See <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/facilities\/501-toilets\/\">Built Environment 5.01 Toilets<\/a> for guidance on grabrails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure that there is enough space inside the room for a wheelchair user to turn comfortably. The minimum turning circle is 1500mm by 1500mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">First aid rooms<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First aid rooms should be easy for many users to access. Any bench or bed for examination and treatment must be height adjustable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide drinking water in the room or locate the room near a drinking water dispenser as well toilet facilities where possible. Use dimmable lighting or window blinds to reduce light levels when needed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Outdoor rest spaces and smoking areas<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All outdoor rest spaces, such as smoking areas, should be accessible. They should have different seating options. In colder weather, add heating. Place bins at lower heights for easy access. If an outdoor rest space is not accessible, like on an upstairs terrace, offer an alternative, such as outside an entrance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"definitions_list\" class=\"wp-block-ace-definitions-list bg_white\"><h3>Definitions and acronyms<\/h3><div class=\"ace-definitions-list bg_grey inner-padding\"><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Ablution<\/h4><div><p>Washing part of the body, often as part of a religious rite. For example, washing feet before prayer.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Approved Document M (ADM)<\/h4><div><p>This refers to \u201cApproved Document M: Access to and use of buildings, Vol 2\u201d. It is sometimes known as Part M and is the main building regulation in England to ensure that people can access and use buildings and their facilities.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>BS8300<\/h4><div><p>This refers to \u201cBS 8300:2018 Design of an accessible and inclusive built environment\u201d. It is a code of practice provided by the British Standards Institute. Whereas ADM is part of building regulations, BS8300 is a standard of best practice.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Sensory rooms<\/h4><div><p>A sensory room, or quiet room, is a room or space that is provided so that people can manage their neurological or sensory processing needs or their mental wellbeing during their visit.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"learning_resources\" class=\"wp-block-ace-standard-learning-resources standard-content\"><h3>Learning Resources<\/h3><div class=\"links-on-newtab-text\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenbs.com\/PublicationIndex\/documents\/details?Pub=BSI&amp;DocID=320547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BS8300 &#8211; Part 2<\/a>\u202f(BSI&nbsp;standards can be\u202fpurchased\u202fonline.
