They enable their owners to live independently. Most assistance animals are dogs. This guidance focuses on creating safe spaces for assistance dogs.

People with assistance dogs need a safe and clean place for their dogs to go to the toilet. Assistance dogs are trained to toilet only when given a command. To support them, it’s vital to provide a specific toileting area, known as a . This keeps the space clean and ensures the dog’s wellbeing.

For further information on communicating with customers with assistance animals, please refer to Customer Service 2.06 Assistance Dogs.

Practical example

<img decoding="async" src="https://allin.online/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/ACE-All-In-51-scaled.jpg" alt="Assistance dog and owner in a flat spending area close to an arts venue. Consider the height of the waste disposal as well as the location. It should be accessible to wheelchair users.

A nearby water connection and hose with accessible controls is helpful for providing drinking water and maintaining hygiene.

Terrain

You should consider the terrain of the to ensure it is both accessible to the individual and safe for the animal. Some common types of terrains are grass, gravel or concrete.

If it’s impractical to provide a large area of grass in the enclosure, consider providing grass and other plant growth around the outside edge, as the scent often helps stimulate spending in dogs more used to relieving on grass. An enclosure should have a slight gradient to assist drainage.

Accessibility

The must be and accessed via a route. If there is a gate, it should be easy for disabled people, including wheelchair users, to open and pass through with their assistance dog.

Key features to consider if your spending area has a gate include:

wide opening of at least 1000mm

easy-to-use latch that can be operated with one hand, without needing to twist, grip tightly or apply force

clear space on both sides of the gate to manoeuvre, at least 300mm

low or no threshold to prevent tripping hazards

good visibility with clear contrast

Lighting

Consider lighting levels carefully.
