Providing a sensory or quiet room can help make your venue more accessible or inclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <span title=\"Sensory room\" data-definition-name=\"Sensory room\" data-definition=\"sensory-room\" data-definition-id=\"5836\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, or quiet room, is a calm, low-stimuli space where someone can go to reset, for example, after experiencing sensory overload. It can be reassuring for people to know there is a place to go and regulate sensory needs. For many, access to a well-planned sensory room means they can enjoy creative and cultural spaces instead of avoiding them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The features of sensory rooms, as laid out in <span title=\"BS8300\" data-definition-name=\"BS8300\" data-definition=\"bs8300\" data-definition-id=\"3603\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> and <span title=\"PAS6463\" data-definition-name=\"PAS6463\" data-definition=\"pas6463\" data-definition-id=\"4716\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, are based on key user design principles to make sure that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>sensory rooms are easily accessible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the space is designed to be flexible to meet various sensory needs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sensory rooms are well-managed and are available when needed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>people can manage their sensory needs with dignity and autonomy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sensory or quiet rooms have features different from other support rooms, such as general rest spaces, prayer or reflection rooms, first aid rooms, or outdoor spaces and smoking areas. It is located near the main areas of the building and close to staff support. Staff are trained to understand the needs of users. The organisation has a clear policy on room usage. The room is always unlocked, so no permission is needed to enter. A push-pad makes the door easy to open.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"key_considerations\" class=\"wp-block-ace-standard-key-considerations standard-key-considerations standard-content\"><h3>Key considerations<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">General<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room must be easy to reach. This helps people return to their activities quickly. Clear signs should direct them to the room. It needs <span data-definition=\"step-free\" data-definition-id=\"5920\" title=\"Step-free\" data-definition-name=\"Step-free\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> access and ample space to move around. There should be a turning circle for wheelchair users, at least 1500mm by 1500mm. Also, think about whether an alternative <span title=\"Sensory room\" data-definition-name=\"Sensory room\" data-definition=\"sensory-room\" data-definition-id=\"5836\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or a space for artists is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Design<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room should feel calm and quiet. Use muted, matte natural colours like green, blue, or brown. The ceiling and at least one wall should be plain, without artwork or plants. Avoid bright colours, bold patterns, and sharp lines, like those on venetian blinds. These can create <span data-definition=\"visual-noise\" data-definition-id=\"5835\" title=\"Visual noise\" data-definition-name=\"Visual noise\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> for some people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Environment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The environment should be calm and quiet. Include options that allow an individual to tailor the space to meet their needs. This means providing options like dimmable lights, blinds, and adjustable temperature. Provide tools like <span data-definition=\"fidget-items\" data-definition-id=\"5843\" title=\"Fidget items\" data-definition-name=\"Fidget items\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, a herb garden or optional nature sounds so that people can choose to add stimuli if they wish. The room must be free from background noise and smells. A window with a view of nature is ideal. If that&#8217;s not possible, a poster can work too. Both should be easy to cover for those who prefer a plain space. It helps for people to see the room before entering. You could place a photo of the outside on the door or share one online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The space should meet the acoustic values recommended in <span data-definition=\"pas6463\" title=\"PAS6463\" data-definition-name=\"PAS6463\" data-definition-id=\"4716\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. The space should allow temperature control between 19\u00b0C and 23\u00b0C. Provide a way to regularly air out the space to keep it comfortable for people who are sensitive to smells and to maintain air quality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Furniture<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The furniture should have rounded edges and be flexible and movable. Provide a choice of seating, including floor cushions, footstools, and seating that allows some movement such as a rocker-type chair. Provide storage for <span title=\"Fidget items\" data-definition-name=\"Fidget items\" data-definition=\"fidget-items\" data-definition-id=\"5843\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> to keep the room tidy. Use clear signs with <span title=\"Easy Read\" data-definition-name=\"Easy Read\" data-definition=\"easy-read\" data-definition-id=\"4354\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> formatting. Soft finishings, like cushions or carpets, also help to absorb noise. A mirror can be useful so people can check their appearance before leaving, but this should be positioned out of direct sight or in a cupboard door. Choose furnishes and finishes that do not contain <span data-definition=\"volatile-organic-compounds-vocs\" title=\"Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)\" data-definition-name=\"Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)\" data-definition-id=\"8590\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Management<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Permanent sensory rooms should be used only for their intended purpose. They shouldn\u2019t serve as meeting rooms or for anything else. This ensures they are available when needed. The room should, if possible, remain unlocked. People shouldn\u2019t need to ask for permission to use it. An \u2018in use\u2019 sign should be on the door to indicate when it\u2019s occupied by someone needing privacy. The sensory room can be shared, but the sign allows for private use if necessary. Staff should manage this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should have a clear management policy so your staff know how to use and manage the room. Make it clear that <span title=\"Stimming\" data-definition-name=\"Stimming\" data-definition=\"stimming\" data-definition-id=\"5831\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or <span title=\"Tic-ing\" data-definition-name=\"Tic-ing\" data-definition=\"tic-ing\" data-definition-id=\"5827\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> is welcome in the space. Staff should receive training that covers a range of access needs. This will ensure staff understand the needs of those using a sensory room. However, you should find other ways to support people with sensory access needs. One helpful approach is to keep a sensory kit ready. This kit can quickly change a room into a calming space when needed. A good sensory kit might include soft lighting, <span data-definition=\"easy-read\" data-definition-id=\"4354\" title=\"Easy Read\" data-definition-name=\"Easy Read\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> information, tactile toys, ear defenders, sunglasses, and other sensory-friendly items. It is a code of practice for buildings provided by the British Standards Institute. Whereas ADM is part of building regulations, PAS6463 is a standard of best practice.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Sensory room<\/h4><div><p>A sensory room, or quiet room, is a room or space that is provided so that people can manage their neurological or sensory processing needs or their mental wellbeing during their visit.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Step-free<\/h4><div><p>When lifts or ramps are used to move between different areas due to stepped access through a space.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Stimming<\/h4><div><p>This is also called self-stimulating behaviour. Someone might stim to reduce sensory input (e.g. by focusing on a single sound like humming), or to gain sensory input (e.g. through movement), to reduce stress and anxiety, or for enjoyment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Tic-ing<\/h4><div><p>Tics are fast, repetitive muscle movements that result in hard-to-control movements or sounds. Tics might include repeating a word or phrase, coughing or sniffing or finger-clicking.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Visual noise<\/h4><div><p>This is a sense of overwhelm created by lots of visual clutter, such as bold patterns.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)<\/h4><div><p>Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are found in many materials, including furniture, craft supplies or perfumes.
