This includes interactive areas for visitors, like reading rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people are historically underrepresented in behind-the-scenes jobs. This is often because of inaccessible environments and equipment. Poor access or not being able to join a learning activity can prevent a disabled person from entering the creative and cultural sector. Providing good access will help more disabled people consider careers in creative and cultural spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Standard for accessible learning and engagement environments is based on key user design principles to make sure that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>disabled people can use workstations and technical equipment easily<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>participants can access spaces needed for learning activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shared workplace facilities have good basic access provision<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>disabled people feel confident they won&#8217;t face access barriers during activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with all spaces, your learning and engagement areas should also incorporate general built environment accessibility. This will help people involved in learning and engagement activities find the information they need. Consider how activities can be carried out in a more accessible space if needed. Remember, a disabled person using a workspace long-term may require a personalised assessment to tailor the space to their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Shared areas<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure there is <span title=\"Level access\" data-definition-name=\"Level access\" data-definition=\"level-access\" data-definition-id=\"4203\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> and clear <span title=\"Wayfinding\" data-definition-name=\"Wayfinding\" data-definition=\"wayfinding\" data-definition-id=\"5677\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. This helps people find and reach the spaces they need for learning. See <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/signage-and-wayfinding\/\">Built Environment 3.01 Signage and Wayfinding<\/a> for further guidance. Consider if these shared areas are safe and comfortable for disabled individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, ensure that shared facilities like break rooms or kitchens have proper access. This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>level access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>enough turning space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>accessible refreshment points<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Workstations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide shared resources for workstations such as height-adjustable desks, ergonomic chairs, and <span title=\"Task lighting\" data-definition-name=\"Task lighting\" data-definition=\"task-lighting\" data-definition-id=\"8699\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. If using a fixed desk, ensure the surface is between 760mm and 850mm above the floor. There should be at least 700mm clear space to the floor beneath, and a knee recess at least 500mm deep. Ensure there are some wheelchair accessible workspaces with adequate turning space of at least 1.5m by 1.5m in front of the workstation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where possible, provide 2050mm space between rows of facing desks, and at least 1050mm space alongside desks and any wall or obstruction. If feasible, position some workstations so that users can sit with their backs against a wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Items such as cable baskets underneath desks help to reduce visual noise. Provide sufficient sockets to support additional <span title=\"Assistive technology\" data-definition-name=\"Assistive technology\" data-definition=\"assistive-technology\" data-definition-id=\"4308\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. Ensure any equipment at the workstation can be moved or adjusted to suit individual preferences, such as reaching distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure there is room for storing mobility aids during activities.
