This Standard follows key design principles to ensure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>backstage areas and stages are as physically accessible as possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sensory access is considered in design and decor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>performers can move safely and comfortably between spaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>performers can evacuate the venue in an emergency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>accessible facilities, such as toilets, are available to performers as well as audiences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Standard is based on <span title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, <span data-definition=\"technical-guidance-document-m-tgd-m\" title=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-name=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-id=\"8602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, and <span title=\"BS8300\" data-definition-name=\"BS8300\" data-definition=\"bs8300\" data-definition-id=\"3603\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> principles, applied to artist and performer spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where performer access is similar to audience provisions, such as in<a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/access-routes\/\"> Built Environment 3.05 Access Routes<\/a>, we refer you to those Standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Performers can be thought of as temporary staff in your venue. This allows performers to reach key areas like dressing rooms, the green room, the stage, and toilets. If a space only has stepped access, a ramp, slope, or lift should be used, as outlined in <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/access-routes\/\">Built Environment 3.05 Access Routes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ramps should be near to the steps as an obvious and convenient alternative. Ramp gradient should meet <span title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> and <span title=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-name=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition=\"technical-guidance-document-m-tgd-m\" data-definition-id=\"8602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> specifications. Ramps should be wide enough for all users, including those with mobility aids. If the ramp is long, include rest points as required by ADM and TGD M. Add 100mm high upstands to any open edges of a ramp to prevent wheelchairs or walking aids from slipping off the sides. The ramp&#8217;s surface must be non-slip and contrast in colour with the area around it for easy identification. Handrails should be installed on both sides at an appropriate height. They should allow for a continuous finger grip around the rail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lifts should be available at least where ramps are not feasible. They must fit wheelchair users, mobility scooters, or several people at once. Controls need to be at an accessible height. They should have clear tactile markings, <span title=\"Braille\" data-definition-name=\"Braille\" data-definition=\"braille\" data-definition-id=\"4316\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, and a colour contrast for those with visual impairments. Audio announcements should state the floor level and lift operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stage lifts can be fixed or portable. They may be owned by the venue or hired in. Usually, they are <span title=\"Platform lifts\" data-definition-name=\"Platform lifts\" data-definition=\"platform-lifts\" data-definition-id=\"5741\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or <span title=\"Stairlifts\" data-definition-name=\"Stairlifts\" data-definition=\"stairlifts\" data-definition-id=\"5554\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, not <span title=\"Passenger lifts\" data-definition-name=\"Passenger lifts\" data-definition=\"passenger-lifts\" data-definition-id=\"5552\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. Where a passenger lift or platform lift isn\u2019t possible, consider a mechanical <span data-definition=\"stair-climber\" title=\"Stair climber\" data-definition-name=\"Stair climber\" data-definition-id=\"8697\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, which can be a safer option compared to stairlifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/access-routes\/\" data-type=\"standard\" data-id=\"4583\">Built Environment 3.05 Access Routes<\/a> for further guidance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Sensory access<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A decor scheme can define different areas of a building. Using contrasting colours helps distinguish walls, floors, doors, furnishings, <span title=\"Fixtures and fittings\" data-definition-name=\"Fixtures and fittings\" data-definition=\"fixtures-and-fittings-2\" data-definition-id=\"4719\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. This approach improves sensory access for various creatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more detail refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/flooring-and-wall-surfaces\/\">Built Environment 3.02 Flooring and Wall Surfaces<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/lighting-and-contrast\/\">Built Environment 3.03 Lighting and Contrast<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Facilities<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accessible toilets and dressing rooms must be designed to meet the needs of all users. They should ensure comfort, dignity, and ease of use. These facilities should have <span title=\"Step-free\" data-definition-name=\"Step-free\" data-definition=\"step-free\" data-definition-id=\"5920\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> access and should be near both performance and public areas. Having accessible dressing rooms in addition to accessible toilets also means the toilets remain available for others to use while a performer is changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For dressing rooms, use <span title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> and <span title=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-name=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition=\"technical-guidance-document-m-tgd-m\" data-definition-id=\"8602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> specifications for toilets and changing rooms as a guide. Allow a space of at least 2000mm by 2200mm for a single changing room. Doors must be wide enough for wheelchair users and those with mobility aids. They should have easy-to-use handles and locks that don\u2019t need a tight grip or twisting. Inside, there should be enough space for turning and positioning. Include grab rails, an accessible sink and mirror, plus a shelf or storage for personal items. Clear signage should guide people to these facilities, using visual contrast and symbols for easy recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For further details about accessible toilet provision, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/facilities\/501-toilets\/\">Built Environment 5.01 Toilets<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Backstage<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dressing rooms and green rooms should be comfortable and predictable. This design helps reduce anxiety and sensory stress. The layout should be logical and clutter-free. It should also allow easy movement for wheelchair users and those with mobility aids. Where obstacles are unavoidable, provide hazard protection for anything that projects more than 100mm onto a circulation route and where the lower edge is more than 300mm above the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Floor coverings should not have bold patterns, as they can be disorienting. Avoid shiny finishes on walls and floors since these can cause confusion or discomfort. Lighting must be steady with no flickering. It should also have a soft, warm colour to create a calming atmosphere. Ideally, include dimmer controls, as well as adjustable <span data-definition=\"task-lighting\" title=\"Task lighting\" data-definition-name=\"Task lighting\" data-definition-id=\"8699\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> where brighter, focussed light may be needed. The materials for ceilings, walls, and floors should absorb sound well. This helps minimise echo and background noise, leading to a more controlled acoustic environment. Refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/flooring-and-wall-surfaces\/\">Built Environment 3.02 Flooring and Wall Surfaces<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/lighting-and-contrast\/\">Built Environment 3.03 Lighting and Contrast<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s good practice to provide charging ports and space to park and charge mobility devices such as scooters. Ensure fire safety and evacuation is considered and managed for this use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">On-stage<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On-stage areas should be free from unnecessary obstructions. Any essential equipment should be positioned off-stage when possible. If obstacles must stay on-stage, they need to be clearly visible and in a contrasting colour to the background. Mark the edge of the stage with a contrasting colour and texture for safety. Position lighting to avoid glare or strong shadows that could confuse performers and crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Emergency evacuation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Performers, staff and audience members must be able to safely evacuate the venue in an emergency. Access routes for evacuation should be accessible from performer areas. Emergency alarms should be fitted in dressing rooms, green rooms, and toilets. It is designed to transport an individual up and down flights of stairs with the assistance of an operator.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Stairlifts<\/h4><div><p>A chair, or wheelchair platform, that is fitted on one side of a set of stairs and rises or descends the staircase.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Step-free<\/h4><div><p>When lifts or ramps are used to move between different areas due to stepped access through a space.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Task lighting<\/h4><div><p>Task lighting is lighting that is focused in a particular direction to help the user carry out a specific task.
