You can create an accessible exhibition space by following these key design principles to make sure that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>there is <span data-definition=\"level-access\" data-definition-id=\"4203\" title=\"Level access\" data-definition-name=\"Level access\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> throughout<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the main routes and any escape routes have enough room for wheelchair turning circles and passing places<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>there is tactile <span data-definition=\"wayfinding\" data-definition-id=\"5677\" title=\"Wayfinding\" data-definition-name=\"Wayfinding\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, so people can navigate the space with low or no vision<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the exhibit lighting is even and doesn\u2019t create deep shadows or pools of bright light<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>information about the exhibition is clearly identifiable and easy to engage with<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>people can access the displays from a range of heights, including from a seated position<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>there is a range of seating available throughout the space<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Standard focuses on the built environment. There are many creative ways to adapt displays and share objects and resources with visitors. See also <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/flooring-and-wall-surfaces\/\">Built Environment 3.02 Floor and Wall Surfaces<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/lighting-and-contrast\/\">Built Environment 3.03 Lighting and Contrast<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/artistic-environments\/seating\/\">Built Environment 4.01 Seating<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure that spaces are accessible via pathways from reception, auditoria, or other exhibition areas, as outlined in <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/access-routes\/\">Built Environment 3.05 Access Routes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Moving around<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plan how people will move through the space. Avoid bottlenecks by placing various points of interest well apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use tactile <span data-definition=\"wayfinding\" data-definition-id=\"5677\" title=\"Wayfinding\" data-definition-name=\"Wayfinding\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> to help those with low or no vision navigate independently. The design can vary based on what feels intuitive for the space and exhibit. Consult blind and visually impaired experts for guidance. You can also pair this with audio support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/signage-and-wayfinding\/\">Built Environment 3.01 Signage and Wayfinding<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/flooring-and-wall-surfaces\/\">Built Environment 3.02 Flooring and Wall Surfaces<\/a> for further guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Displays<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Displays should be accessible for seated and standing users. If possible, consider height-adjustable displays. The measurements of a lowered counter below can be applied to displays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your countertop display surface should be at a height of 760mm to 850mm and be at least 1500mm long. Provide a knee recess of 700mm to 800mm above the floor, and 500mm deep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The approach to the countertop display should be clear and accessible. Provide at least 1800mm by 1800mm clear space in front of the display to allow turning. Where this isn&#8217;t possible, use these minimum guidelines: if there is a knee recess of at least 500mm deep, provide a clear area at least 1200mm deep by 1800mm wide, or, if there is no knee recess, provide a clear area at least 1400mm deep by 2200mm wide. See <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/food-drink-and-retail\/counters\/\">Built Environment 6.01 Counters<\/a> for more detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use non-reflective glass or film where practical. This improves visibility by preventing glare from blocking the view. It also maintains a view with true colour likeness. However, items behind non-reflective displays may be more vulnerable to light damage and fading, unless using specialised glass with protective coatings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artifacts and texts should not be displayed flat. Items displayed flat on a table can only be viewed by standing directly overhead. Items displayed flat on a wall may lead to neck strain for people who are shorter or viewing from a seated position. Instead, display items with a forward tilt. This enables more people to view the displays, such as wheelchair users and children, and prevents neck strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where labels are written in multiple languages, use the same text size for all languages to ensure accessibility for all. This is a legal requirement in some regions. This resource also covers suggested word count and positioning for exhibit graphics and labels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Seating<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide a variety of seating options, including seats with arms and backs. Distribute seating throughout the exhibition space so visitors can rest when needed. Ensure the seating doesn\u2019t obstruct the exhibition route but that it is also visually contrasted from the floor and walls to ensure visitors can easily locate it. Where possible, provide wheelchair parking areas adjacent to the seating. Seats facing specific exhibits add to accessibility. It&#8217;s also important to include seating in quieter areas where people can relax.
