There is a flat landing at the top, bottom, and midway.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"key_considerations\" class=\"wp-block-ace-standard-key-considerations standard-key-considerations standard-content\"><h3>Key considerations<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Obstructions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When moving across flat areas, pathways must be clear. This includes avoiding objects that stick out or temporary furniture. Doors and windows should not open into access routes. If this is unavoidable, provide guarding or protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pathways need to be wide enough for two wheelchair users or people with mobility aids to pass comfortably. If this isn\u2019t possible, provide passing places at regular intervals, every 25m or within direct sight of each other, whichever is closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Lifts<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When moving between floors is required, lifts should be provided. <span title=\"Passenger lifts\" data-definition-name=\"Passenger lifts\" data-definition=\"passenger-lifts\" data-definition-id=\"5552\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> are preferred. If a passenger lift is not possible, install a <span title=\"Platform lift\" data-definition-name=\"Platform lift\" data-definition=\"platform-lift\" data-definition-id=\"5548\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. <span title=\"Stairlifts\" data-definition-name=\"Stairlifts\" data-definition=\"stairlifts\" data-definition-id=\"5554\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> are only acceptable in rare cases. See <span title=\"BS8300\" data-definition-name=\"BS8300\" data-definition=\"bs8300\" data-definition-id=\"3603\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> for further details. Where a passenger lift or platform is not possible, a mechanical <span data-definition=\"stair-climber\" title=\"Stair climber\" data-definition-name=\"Stair climber\" data-definition-id=\"8697\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> may be suitable, at least as a temporary measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lift size and door timings must meet <span title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or <span data-definition=\"technical-guidance-document-m-tgd-m\" title=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-name=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-id=\"8602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> standards for easy entry and exit for all users. In new buildings, TGD M requires landing areas in front of lift doors to measure 1800mm by 1800mm. This is encouraged for all buildings where possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lifts must have audio announcements in both the lift and lobby. See <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/announcements-alarms-and-audio-guidance\/\" data-type=\"standard\" data-id=\"4582\">Built Environment 3.04 Announcements, Alarms, and Audio Guidance<\/a> for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure your lift has evenly distributed lighting with minimal glare, and clear, accessible buttons featuring <span title=\"Tactile embossing\" data-definition-name=\"Tactile embossing\" data-definition=\"tactile-embossing\" data-definition-id=\"5550\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, <span title=\"Braille\" data-definition-name=\"Braille\" data-definition=\"braille\" data-definition-id=\"4316\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, and colour contrast. See <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/lighting-and-contrast\/\" data-type=\"standard\" data-id=\"4581\">Built Environment 3.03 Lighting and Contrast<\/a> for guidance on lighting. See <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/signage-and-wayfinding\/\" data-type=\"standard\" data-id=\"4579\">Built Environment 3.01 Signage and Wayfinding<\/a> for more on signage, including tactile wayfinding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A handrail should be fitted on at least one side of the lift. There should be a mirror on the back wall, above handrail height, to assist reversing out of the lift. Alternatively, smaller mirror positioned with care will assist reversing out but minimise the impact on people with certain sensitivities to reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The floor surface must provide good grip. Avoid dark flooring in lift cars as this can be interpreted as a change in level or the lift shaft. Lifts must also comply with all relevant legal standards as outlined in <span title=\"Lift legislation documents\" data-definition-name=\"Lift legislation documents\" data-definition=\"lift-legislation-documents\" data-definition-id=\"5546\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In platform lifts, it\u2019s best practice to avoid continuous pressure controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Ramps<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ramps should always be as shallow as possible and meet <span title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> and <span title=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-name=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition=\"technical-guidance-document-m-tgd-m\" data-definition-id=\"8602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> gradient guidelines. Their length and height must not exceed the limits set by ADM and TGD M. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flat landing points should be at the top, bottom, and along longer ramps for resting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The surface must be slip-resistant and the colour must contrast visually with the surroundings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Add safety boards or upstands, at least 100mm high, on the open non-entry sides in a contrasting colour. This prevents wheelchairs or walking aids from slipping off the sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Handrails should be installed on both sides at an appropriate height. They should allow for a continuous finger grip around the rail. See below for more on handrails. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Stairs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stairs should be available alongside lifts, and where possible, as an alternative to ramps. For some, stairs are easier than sloped surfaces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each flight of stairs must have a flat landing at the top and bottom, with handrails on both sides. Stairs must follow size and height limits set by <span title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, <span data-definition=\"approved-document-k\" title=\"Approved Document K\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document K\" data-definition-id=\"5567\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, <span title=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-name=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition=\"technical-guidance-document-m-tgd-m\" data-definition-id=\"8602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, and <span data-definition=\"technical-guidance-document-k-tdg-k\" title=\"Technical Guidance Document K (TDG K)\" data-definition-name=\"Technical Guidance Document K (TDG K)\" data-definition-id=\"8711\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stairs should feature colour-contrasted <span data-definition=\"nosing\" title=\"Nosing\" data-definition-name=\"Nosing\" data-definition-id=\"8705\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> strips, at least 55mm wide, on each step edge. Stairs should have solid, closed <span data-definition=\"risers\" title=\"Risers\" data-definition-name=\"Risers\" data-definition-id=\"8726\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> rather than open gaps. Outdoor stairs must include <span title=\"Tactile flooring\" data-definition-name=\"Tactile flooring\" data-definition=\"tactile-paving\" data-definition-id=\"5045\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> at level changes, using the <span title=\"Corduroy or hazard flooring\" data-definition-name=\"Corduroy or hazard flooring\" data-definition=\"corduroy-or-hazard-flooring\" data-definition-id=\"4994\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> style. This does not apply to indoor stairs unless they connect directly to an access route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoid single steps as this create a trip hazard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Handrails<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Handrails must be easy to grip and a comfortable temperature to touch. They should support forearms if needed. They must be securely fixed away from the wall. This gap from the wall allows for a continuous finger grip along the rail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Handrails should continue horizontally across landings. Handrails should also extend 300mm beyond the first and last steps, to indicate level changes. The ends of each handrail should be rounded and turn downwards towards the floor or into the adjacent wall. This prevents catching clothing or other items, which can lead to trips or falls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide lower handrails where possible to support anyone who may not be able to reach standard height handrails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use <span data-definition=\"braille\" title=\"Braille\" data-definition-name=\"Braille\" data-definition-id=\"4316\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or <span data-definition=\"tactile-embossing\" title=\"Tactile embossing\" data-definition-name=\"Tactile embossing\" data-definition-id=\"5550\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> on the underside of handrails to provide wayfinding information, such as the floor level and direction of travel. It is a code of practice provided by the British Standards Institute. Whereas ADM is part of building regulations, BS8300 is a standard of best practice.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Corduroy or hazard flooring<\/h4><div><p>A type of tactile flooring with raised stripes usually used before steps (and in the external environment, level crossings and similar). The raised stripes translate as: \u2018hazard, proceed with caution\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Lift legislation documents<\/h4><div><p>Documents that detail the standards lifts should meet to be fit for purpose. The height of a riser is called the rise.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Stair climber<\/h4><div><p>A mechanical stair climber is a motorised mobility device. It is designed to transport an individual up and down flights of stairs with the assistance of an operator.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Stairlifts<\/h4><div><p>A chair, or wheelchair platform, that is fitted on one side of a set of stairs and rises or descends the staircase.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Tactile embossing<\/h4><div><p>When letters and features physically stand out from their background, raised up from the surface in three dimensions so they can be felt by touch.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Tactile flooring<\/h4><div><p>Paving or flooring that is textured with bumps or ridges to help blind or visually impaired people navigate a space.
