They help sense the shapes of a space and, for some, see details more clearly. For deaf people and those who are hard of hearing, good lighting aids in understanding sign language and lip reading. Lighting also impacts neurodivergent visitors, as harsh or flickering lights can cause sensory discomfort. Flickering lights or strobe effects may trigger migraines, visual auras, or seizures. Therefore, careful lighting design is crucial for accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lighting influences how well different surfaces contrast. If artificial lighting changes how colours appear, it can make it difficult to distinguish between surfaces, even if the surfaces have a good <span title=\"Light Reflectance Value (LRV)\" data-definition-name=\"Light Reflectance Value (LRV)\" data-definition=\"light-reflectance-value-lrv\" data-definition-id=\"4735\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. This can reduce visibility and hinder accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The features of lighting in <span title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, <span data-definition=\"technical-guidance-document-m-tgd-m\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">General features<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There should be <span title=\"Visual contrast\" data-definition-name=\"Visual contrast\" data-definition=\"visual-contrast\" data-definition-id=\"5404\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> between different coloured surfaces, aided by lighting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minimise glare from both artificial and natural light. Aim for even light distribution, avoiding bright spots and deep shadows. Ensure artificial lighting works well with other electronic and radio frequency installations. Reduce light flicker and replace faulty bulbs quickly. If you can&#8217;t replace a flickering light, try to remove it. Also, note that uplighters placed low or at floor level can disorient some blind and partially sighted people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When using dimmer switches, avoid fittings that omit a buzzing or humming noise. This noise can often be detected by people with heightened auditory sense, causing pain, discomfort or distraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure gentle transitions between light and dark areas to enable visitors\u2019 vision to adjust gradually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artificial lighting should use lamps that provide good colour rendering. A minimum <span data-definition=\"colour-rendering-index-cri\" title=\"Colour rendering index (CRI)\" data-definition-name=\"Colour rendering index (CRI)\" data-definition-id=\"8709\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> of 80 <span data-definition=\"ra-value\" title=\"Ra value\" data-definition-name=\"Ra value\" data-definition-id=\"8710\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> is recommended for general areas, increasing to 90 Ra or higher where colour quality is critical, such as studios, galleries, and exhibition spaces. Note that ultraviolet (UV) light, electromagnetic fields, and blue light can cause discomfort, particularly for people with migraines or sensory sensitivities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Entrances and lobbies<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use transitional lighting in entrance lobbies. This helps create a smooth contrast from outside to inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure lighting is clear but not too bright in areas designated for sign language interpretation, such as reception desks. Note that uplighters can create shadows, making it harder to access sign language interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">WC facilities<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In toilet facilities, avoid using timed or movement sensor lighting. If necessary, consider passive infrared (PIR) or thermal detection lighting instead. The sensors should be located immediately inside the door using delay on triggering. The lighting should be set to a low dimmed level (less than 10% intensity) when not triggered, rather than completely dark. Apply a three to five second transition from the initial sensor detection for any light intensity changes. It is sometimes known as Part M and is the main building regulation in England to ensure that people can access and use buildings and their facilities.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>BS8300<\/h4><div><p>This refers to \u201cBS 8300:2018 Design of an accessible and inclusive built environment\u201d. It is a code of practice provided by the British Standards Institute. Whereas ADM is part of building regulations, BS8300 is a standard of best practice.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Colour rendering index (CRI)<\/h4><div><p>The Colour Rendering Index (CRI) is a measure of how well a certain light can show the true colours of an object. It uses a scale from 0 to 100, where a score of 100 represents flawless colour fidelity. The number on this scale is called the Ra value.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Light Reflectance Value (LRV)<\/h4><div><p>Light Reflectance Value (LRV) is a measurement of how much visible light a surface reflects. It is expressed as a percentage from 0% (pure black, absorbing all light) to 100% (pure white, reflecting all light).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Ra<\/h4><div><p>The Ra value of a light is a measure of how well it shows the true colour of an object, on average.
