Very absorbent surfaces can muffle or mute sound. Both extremes can create an access barrier for different groups.

Ideal surface materials help people sense their location relative to walls and ceilings. This is especially important for visually impaired people, who often rely on sound to understand a space. Floor and wall surfaces should provide clear audio signals without echoes or muffling. Carpet and carpet tiles help absorb sound. Where this isn’t practical, consider a vinyl finish with an absorptive backing.

You can find more detailed recommendations for acoustic design in and additional best practice in .

Flooring

General features

Ensure there is clear colour contrast between walls and floors. Avoid shiny floor finishes that may appear slippery or cause glare. Don’t use floor patterns that could be confused with steps or changes in level, like bold repeating stripes.

Avoid shiny or highly contrasting trims, which can cause hesitation or confusion. Avoid mats that could cause ‘strobe effect’, for example, alternate bands of fibres and metal. Ensure the finishes have a similar and are non-reflective.

Floor surfaces should be slip-resistant and provide a firm foothold, as well as good wheel grip. Use materials with similar levels of slip-resistance across adjoining surfaces. Ensure there is a smooth join wherever two surfaces meet.

Check that any matting is level with the floor. If the matting isn’t level, it should have rubber backing with edges. This means the edge of the matting slopes down towards the floor.

To avoid slips, ensure that mats at entrance points are long enough to prevent rainwater from entering.

Keep in mind that carpet creates an access barrier for some people using mobility aids. This is because carpet material creates friction and resistance. Ensure any carpet has a very low pile and allows smooth rolling.

When selecting new finishes, select flooring and adhesives with low emissions.

Toilets

Toilets should have flooring that is slip-resistant, including when it is wet. Toilets should have sufficient colour contrast between the flooring and walls, as well as .

Ramps

Ramp surfaces must be slip-resistant, even when wet. There should be sufficient colour contrast at the landing points at both the top and bottom of the ramp. Ramps need a raised barrier at least 100mm high on the non-entry sides, also with colour contrast.

See Built Environment 3.05 Access Routes for more on ramps.

Stair treads and nosing

and should be slip-resistant, including when wet. The nosing should not protrude significantly. All nosing should be made of a permanent, contrasting material that is at least 55mm wide. Stair nosing should be applied to both the tread (flat part of the step) and the (vertical part of the step).

See Built Environment 3.05 Access Routes for guidance on stairs.

Building approaches

The approaches to a building should have firm, durable and slip-resistant floor surfaces. Surfaces should be flat, not bumpy. specifies that undulations should be no more than 3mm. Loose sand and gravel are not considered to be accessible surfaces. There should be no trip hazards or wheelchair-obstructing surfaces in or around an accessible parking bay. For more about building approaches, refer to Built Environment 1.04 Accessible Approaches.

Tactile flooring

External stairs should have at the top and bottom landings. Internal stairs do not require a hazard warning surface. However, you should be aware of the potential risk of having a stair without a hazard warning surface if it is directly in line with an access route.

You should not use corduroy or hazard flooring at the top and bottom of ramps. These are reserved for more sudden height changes. They can cause a trip hazard or create a barrier for wheelchair users if used on ramps.

Any uncontrolled crossing points across vehicle routes in external areas should be identified by a buff-coloured .

There are other types of you can use to guide visitors. For instance, in a gallery, walls and traditional markers may not work as tactile wayfinding due to cordoned-off exhibits. Obstacles might be in the middle of the room as part of the exhibition. In this case, a can help. Alternatively, another type of marker can be used if it is easy to follow, logical, and consistent, without posing a tripping hazard.

Wall surfaces

There should be clear visual contrast between walls and ceilings, and between walls and floors. Also, ensure there is visual and textural contrast between the wall surface and features like plug sockets.

Patterned walls can be distracting, especially when located behind someone speaking with visitors, like at a reception desk. Glazed screens or reflective surfaces near the desk can obstruct visibility for lip-readers and sign language users.

Standard – specifications

Influencing accessible practice

Definitions and acronyms

Approved Document M (ADM)

This refers to “Approved Document M: Access to and use of buildings, Vol 2”.
