Make sure signage is low enough to be touched. If possible, include audio information too.

Location

Fix signage at a height suitable for all visitors to see and touch. If signs might get hidden by a crowd, raise or suspend them. The headroom for directional signs should be at least 2100mm, ideally 2300mm when practical.

Place directional signs at junction points where people need to choose a direction, like where corridors meet or in reception areas. Ensure the signs follow a clear path from the starting point to the destination. Provide orientation information, such as “you are here” on maps, in accessible locations around the building. This should be along main access routes and clearly visible at entrances. Position signage so people can view it without blocking access routes.

Ensure maps and plans are oriented the same way as the building they represent.

At each end of a route, clearly indicate any steps or ramps that people will encounter.

All signs should be placed where there is enough light to see them clearly, but without glare or reflections.

Keep your signage consistent throughout. This ensures users don’t miss important information because, for example, a different term or colour is used.

Door labels, like room names, should go on the wall outside the room. Position them beside the door handle on the opening side. This way, if the door is propped open, the sign is still visible. This rule applies to all door labels, except for toilet signs, push and pull instructions, or hazard signs, which should be on the door itself.

Leave a small gap between the door’s opening side and the sign. This ensures that someone reading or feeling the sign won’t be at risk if the door opens from the other side.

Content

Signs should use short sentences and simple words. Each destination, like a room or area, should have the same name on all signs.

Symbols and coding

Wherever possible, universal symbols should replace text. Less recognisable symbols and should be used alongside text rather than on their own.

Your signs should follow the universally accepted colour-coded warning signs:

blue for instructions

green for safety

yellow for hazard

red for danger or emergency

Also, use the for accessible facilities like toilets.

Lettering

Keep the colours, design, and of signs consistent in your building. Use a typeface with a relatively large lower case letter height (x-height) to capital letter height ratio. Avoid using block capitals on signage. Block capitals are harder to read for many people.

Where labels are written in multiple languages, use the same text size for all languages to ensure accessibility for all. This is a legal requirement in some regions.

Colour

Ensure there’s enough contrast between the signboard and the background. You can also add a border around your sign.

Make sure the letters and symbols stand out against the signboard. Use light text and symbols on a dark background, or dark text and symbols on a light background. In both cases, aim for a difference in of 70 points.

Specific sign types

Entrances

Make sure all entrances and accessible routes show the .

Lifts

Ensure directional signs to lifts are clear from the building entrance. Inside the lift, the floor or level number must be visible when the doors open. The button symbols should be raised for tactile reading.

Refuge points

Ensure each refuge area is clearly labelled. Signage should be placed at a lower height and clearly state “Refuge – Keep Clear” to prevent misuse of the space. Include signage to indicate the floor number and the stairway number, if there are multiple stairways.

See Built Environment 2.02 Emergency Evacuation for other guidance related to refuge areas.

Tactile information

It’s important to remember that blind or partially sighted people who do not read can still benefit from tactile information, such as .

notes there is no standardised way to present maps and plans in tactile form. Several organisations create different types of tactile maps. You can follow your audience’s needs and consult an access expert if necessary.

Embossed letters (sticking out) are easier to read by touch than engraved letters (sunken in). Use raised contours for symbols on directional and door signs.

Braille

Use for single-word or short multiple-word signs. Use for paragraphs of text. Make sure you place a marker at the left-hand edge of the sign to help someone locate the message.

Consider using Braille or on the underside of handrails to provide wayfinding information, such as the floor level and direction of travel.

In Ireland, provide Braille signage in both and the Irish version, .
