An ARIA live region is a way to mark part of a web page, so screen readers automatically read aloud changes, useful for alerting people to a time limit, when seats are about to expire, or when a list of events are being shown.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Assistive technologies<\/h4><div><p>Software and hardware that disabled people can use to interact with digital technology.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Audio description<\/h4><div><p>Narration that describes visual elements of a live experience or video. Audio description describes important visual details such as costume, set, location, facial expressions, body language and actions.<\/p>\n<p>It can be delivered live through speakers or a headset to people at an event or show, or as a live or pre-recorded audio described tour (for example at a museum). It can also be integrated into the script of a play or a voiceover, or delivered by a character. In a digital context, such as cinema or video, it can be delivered as a separate audio track or integrated into a script or voiceover.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Buttons<\/h4><div><p>An interactive element that is used to trigger an action or process, such as submitting a form, opening a dialogue, or making a booking. Buttons should be created using the native semantic HTML &lt;button&gt; element.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Captioning<\/h4><div><p>A text display of the spoken words and important sound elements of a performance or video. This is usually shown on a screen or caption unit, or integrated into the set so that people can follow along. Captions can be delivered by a captioner in the venue, or remotely. Captions can be pre-scripted or produced live depending on the type of event.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Contrast ratio<\/h4><div><p>Colour contrast ratios are numbers that compare the brightness of text to that of its background. Higher contrast between text and background makes text easier to read. WCAG recommends a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 for body text.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Date pickers<\/h4><div><p>An input tool or widget that lets people select a date using a calendar interface, dropdown menus, or manual entry when using a website.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Focus indicator<\/h4><div><p>A visible outline or highlight that shows where you are on a page when navigating by keyboard. Helps people see which button or link is currently selected.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Heading structure<\/h4><div><p>Use of headings in a logical order (e.g. &lt;h1&gt;, &lt;h2&gt;) to organise content so that screen readers and keyboard users can understand the structure and relationships of the text and the headings.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>HTML<\/h4><div><p>HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the standard language used to create and structure content on the web. It uses tags to format text, embed images, create links, and organize web pages for browsers to display.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Icons<\/h4><div><p>A small picture or symbol, often used on websites or in Easy Read documents. Icons help people understand what something means quickly. They are often used alongside words to help people understand. Icons can show actions (like a ticket icon for booking), places (like a map pin to show where something is), objects (like an ear defenders icon to show you can borrow ear defenders) or information (like a hands-signing icon to show that there is sign language interpretation available).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Keyboard navigation<\/h4><div><p>Using the keys on a keyboard (like the arrow keys, Tab or Enter) to move around a website, document or app. People who cannot use a mouse may use keyboard navigation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Link text<\/h4><div><p>Hyperlinked text consisting of words that clearly explain what a link does or where it goes, such as &#8216;Book tickets for Cinderella&#8217; or &#8216;Download the Summer Programme&#8217;.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Links<\/h4><div><p>A hyperlink (&lt;a&gt;) used to take people to another page, section of a page, or external website. Links are for navigation, not triggering actions.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Plain language<\/h4><div><p>A way of writing or speaking that is clear and simple and avoids jargon and hard words.
