These features help visitors easily\u202fidentify, open,\u202fand pass through doors safely and without\u202fcollisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important that accessible doors, thresholds and lobbies match the specifications within the guidance as closely as possible. Key measurements to consider are the <span title=\"Effective clear width\" data-definition-name=\"Effective clear width\" data-definition=\"effective-clear-width\" data-definition-id=\"4204\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> of the doorway, ensuring enough space for movement. There should also be enough wall space on the opening side of a door to allow for easy manoeuvring to grip the handle, open the door, release it, and move through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strength needed to open a door should be minimal. Powered doors should be timed for smooth access. Indicate which direction the door swings, such as with floor markings. This helps prevent surprises and minimises startle responses. This is particularly helpful for powered doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider the path of the opening door when placing push buttons. Ensure users can continue to pass through the doorway without needing to reposition themselves after the button has been pressed and the door has swung open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other important factors include the height of push buttons, handle and lock height, and height of <span title=\"Thresholds\" data-definition-name=\"Thresholds\" data-definition=\"thresholds\" data-definition-id=\"4201\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> to prevent trip hazards. Where there is a lobby, the size of the space should be appropriate for the door design to allow comfortable movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">External doors<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manual entrance doors with self-closing devices can be difficult for many to open. This is because they require a lot of strength. Powered doors are essential for accessible entrances unless another solution is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Revolving doors are not accessible, so an alternative entry door should always be provided nearby. Any power-operated doors, whether activated by a push button or automatic sensors, should meet key <span title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> measurement requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Internal doors<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Internal doors should only be used where necessary, as they can create access barriers. When installed, they should have a viewing window to help prevent collisions. Handles and fittings should be visually contrasting and made from materials that are not uncomfortably cold to the touch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-closing mechanisms should be used only when necessary. Magnetic or other holding mechanisms should keep doors open unless an emergency alarm or power failure triggers closure. Latches should be easy to use with a closed fist, like lever handles, to assist those with limited hand movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Glass doors and glazed screens<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glass doors and glazed screens must have <span title=\"Manifestations\" data-definition-name=\"Manifestations\" data-definition=\"manifestations\" data-definition-id=\"4202\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> to ensure they are visible and prevent accidental collisions. Manifestations can be decals, patterns, logos, frosted film or contrasting shapes. They are particularly important in buildings with large areas of glazing. Manifestations should be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>positioned at two height levels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clearly distinguishable, including in different lighting conditions and against different backgrounds&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>consistently spaced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>durable and permanent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a glass door is open, it should still be easy to see where the edges of the door are. If the door is part of a wall made entirely of glass, it should stand out clearly, for example, by adding a solid, high-contrast border around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Thresholds<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span title=\"Thresholds\" data-definition-name=\"Thresholds\" data-definition=\"thresholds\" data-definition-id=\"4201\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> should allow for smooth transitions between spaces. The matting surface should be level with the adjacent floor to avoid trip hazards. Use wheel-friendly surfaces like smooth flooring, rubber-backed mats or low-pile carpets. Provide firm matting. Avoid coir matting or other materials that may hinder movement. Ensure that transitions between flooring types are smooth to assist those using mobility aids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Further considerations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creative and cultural spaces face unique challenges with doors and access. Noise pollution can cause accessible doors, like emergency exits, to remain closed or locked when not in use. Avoid these practices by exploring alternative solutions that maintain access. For example, to ensure no one is left outside, install a doorbell or accessible calling system and monitor it properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For <span title=\"Stage doors\" data-definition-name=\"Stage doors\" data-definition=\"stage-door\" data-definition-id=\"4791\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> where fans meet after a show, visibility and accessibility matter. These doors can be hard to find for some disabled people, especially those who are visually impaired. Staff-only areas also need to be accessible. Locks and entry systems should work for disabled staff members. Lowered locks, simple codes, or electronic swipe cards can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In green rooms, dressing rooms, and backstage areas, temporary barriers like curtains, curtain beads, and room dividers can create access issues. Items that hang down may get caught in wheelchair wheels, while temporary dividers can be a hazard if they fall when bumped.
