This ensures&nbsp;the safety of everyone, including disabled people. The guidance follows key design principles to make sure that visitors can clearly&nbsp;identify <span title=\"Refuge points\" data-definition-name=\"Refuge points\" data-definition=\"refuge-points\" data-definition-id=\"4455\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, contact staff from those points, and remain safe while waiting for&nbsp;assistance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evacuation routes&nbsp;must&nbsp;be easy to find and clearly marked. Visitors must be able to follow&nbsp;evacuation&nbsp;routes safely, passing through without obstruction or risk of becoming trapped. The design should minimise the chance of collisions and ensure that pathways&nbsp;always&nbsp;remain&nbsp;clear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an emergency, visitors and staff must know&nbsp;what&#8217;s&nbsp;happening. They also need a way to raise the alarm.&nbsp;Assistance&nbsp;alarms should be easy to reach and use. Once activated, staff should respond quickly to offer support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is essential that all evacuation features match the specifications set out in the guidance as closely as possible. While some evacuation features may differ from other legal requirements, this guidance highlights additional elements that improve accessibility for disabled visitors. A <span title=\"Level access\" data-definition-name=\"Level access\" data-definition=\"level-access\" data-definition-id=\"4203\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or <span title=\"Step-free\" data-definition-name=\"Step-free\" data-definition=\"step-free\" data-definition-id=\"5920\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> route should be available from all areas of a building to a designated refuge point. These spaces must remain&nbsp;clear of obstructions&nbsp;and&nbsp;should not block exit routes. The area should be designed to avoid excessive decoration or overstimulation, reducing the risk of sensory overwhelm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ensure accessibility, a lowered point of contact, such as an intercom or phone, should be installed so that disabled people can easily reach staff for&nbsp;assistance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/signage-and-wayfinding\/\" data-type=\"standard\" data-id=\"4579\">Built Environment 3.01 Signage and Wayfinding<\/a> for guidance on signage at refuge points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\"><strong>Evacuation&nbsp;routes<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evacuation routes should be <span title=\"Level access\" data-definition-name=\"Level access\" data-definition=\"level-access\" data-definition-id=\"4203\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or <span title=\"Step-free\" data-definition-name=\"Step-free\" data-definition=\"step-free\" data-definition-id=\"5920\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> to allow&nbsp;easy&nbsp;movement to <span title=\"Refuge points\" data-definition-name=\"Refuge points\" data-definition=\"refuge-points\" data-definition-id=\"4455\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. Ensure any lifts&nbsp;required&nbsp;on a step-free route are suitable for use during an emergency (see below), otherwise&nbsp;ensure there is ramped access.&nbsp;Doors&nbsp;on&nbsp;evacuation&nbsp;routes should have&nbsp;windows or vision panels. These should be at&nbsp;a lower height to help prevent collisions and ensure visibility for all users.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wide corners and routes help to reduce accidental contact or bumping for people with heightened touch sensitivity. Increasing the width of doors along circulation routes, including leading into refuge areas, supports independent evacuation and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\"><strong>Lifts<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lifts used in emergency evacuations must include the same accessible features as standard passenger lifts. Fire lifts must&nbsp;comply with&nbsp;<span data-definition=\"bs-en-81-76\" title=\"BS EN 81-76\" data-definition-name=\"BS EN 81-76\" data-definition-id=\"8632\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, ensuring they are designed for safe use&nbsp;in the event of&nbsp;an emergency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\"><strong>Location&nbsp;of&nbsp;alarms<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emergency evacuation alarms should be installed at a lowered, accessible height so that all users can reach them. If an alarm is covered by a protective device, the design must consider dexterity&nbsp;needs. This&nbsp;ensures&nbsp;that people with limited hand movement can still activate it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The instruction \u201cbreak glass\u201d often used on alarm points can cause confusion and anxiety for unfamiliar users who may fear that the material will shatter, even though it\u2019s usually plastic that can be easily pushed. Ensure that instructions are clear and intuitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\"><strong>Audible&nbsp;<\/strong>alarms<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alarms should be clearly audible to a wide range of users. It is also important that intercom systems at <span data-definition=\"refuge-points\" data-definition-id=\"4455\" title=\"Refuge points\" data-definition-name=\"Refuge points\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>&nbsp;remain&nbsp;audible when the alarm is sounding, so that people seeking&nbsp;assistance&nbsp;can still communicate with staff.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider the location of alarm sounders or flashing beacons, as these can heighten anxiety or cause pain and discomfort while people wait for evacuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\"><strong>Non-audio&nbsp;alarms<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People who may not hear alarms need alternative alert systems. Install flashing beacons with a low output to avoid excessive glare, which can be uncomfortable or disorienting. Carefully select the light frequency of these beacons to ensure they do not trigger seizures or other medical symptoms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wearable vibrating devices, such as pagers, can provide an&nbsp;additional&nbsp;method of alerting individuals to an emergency.
