When counters are accessible, more visitors can engage comfortably and independently with staff. This includes ticketing, information desks, and food and drink service points. Ensure these counters are on an accessible route with <span data-definition=\"step-free\" data-definition-id=\"5920\" title=\"Step-free\" data-definition-name=\"Step-free\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> access. The path to the front of the counter must be direct and unobstructed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide a minimum clear manoeuvring space of 1800mm by 1800mm in front of counters, and out of the way of circulation routes. Where these measurements aren&#8217;t possible in smaller or older buildings, use the following minimum guidelines from <span data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" title=\"Approved Document M (ADM)\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M (ADM)\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or <span data-definition=\"technical-guidance-document-m-tgd-m\" title=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-name=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-id=\"8602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. If there is a knee recess of at least 500mm deep, provide a clear area at least 1200mm deep by 1800 mm wide. If there is no knee recess, provide a clear area at least 1400mm deep by 2200mm wide. <span data-definition=\"bs8300\" title=\"BS8300\" data-definition-name=\"BS8300\" data-definition-id=\"3603\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> also suggests a minimum 1500mm by 1500mm of clear space in front of counters, though this may not always be suitable, for example where there are multiple counters side by side. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Height and dimensions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any reception desk or counter should serve both standing and seated visitors of different heights. The lowered counter surface must be maximum 760mm above the floor for reception and ticketing counters. Counters at bars, workstations, or kitchenettes must be between 760mm and 850mm above the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ideally, the lowered section of the counter should be 1800mm long. (Note that the legal minimum may be less in some cases). Include a knee recess underneath, at least 500mm deep, and at least 700mm above the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure that the front edge of the counter slopes gently upwards. This helps people with limited hand strength or dexterity pick up coins and small items, like change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check that the lowered counter sections are wheelchair accessible for both staff and visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Acoustics and audio inclusion<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Design your space so people can hear each other easily. Implement measures to cut down on echo and background noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide a <span title=\"Hearing aid induction loop\" data-definition-name=\"Hearing aid induction loop\" data-definition=\"hearing-aid-induction-loop\" data-definition-id=\"4386\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> system at every service point for hearing aid users. Clearly mark it with the <span data-definition=\"international-hearing-loop-symbol\" data-definition-id=\"5984\" title=\"International hearing loop symbol\" data-definition-name=\"International hearing loop symbol\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> (an ear with a \u2018T\u2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Lighting and visual design<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Counters should be well-lit, with lighting levels of at least 200 <span data-definition=\"lux\" data-definition-id=\"5985\" title=\"Lux\" data-definition-name=\"Lux\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> to assist people with visual impairments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make counters easy to identify.
