They are located in the centre of the auditorium, enjoying good sightlines.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"key_considerations\" class=\"wp-block-ace-standard-key-considerations standard-key-considerations standard-content\"><h3>Key considerations<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Design features and measurements for the types of seating below are in <span title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, <span data-definition=\"technical-guidance-document-m-tgd-m\" title=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-name=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-id=\"8602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, and <span title=\"BS8300\" data-definition-name=\"BS8300\" data-definition=\"bs8300\" data-definition-id=\"3603\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Wheelchair users\u2019 spaces<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Design<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wheelchair user spaces should be at least 900 mm wide and 1400 mm deep. Provide extra room for users to enter and exit. Provide a turning circle of at least 1500mm by 1500mm, or larger where possible. This enables wheelchair users to leave their row and the auditorium. Ideally, provide an overall passage width of 2000mm to enable guest to pass behind parked wheelchair users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spaces should provide an adjacent seat with removable or adjustable armrests. This allows attendees to transfer from their wheelchair to their seat if they wish. Each space should also include a seat for a companion and an area for a wheelchair-using companion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Location<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wheelchair user spaces must have <span data-definition=\"step-free\" data-definition-id=\"5920\" title=\"Step-free\" data-definition-name=\"Step-free\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> access from the entry point. They should be easy to reach from the entrance and exit, as well as from accessible toilets and bars. Spaces shouldn&#8217;t be too close or too far from the stage or screen, and they must provide good sightlines. Venues should offer wheelchair spaces in various locations when possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Quantity<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For venues or spaces with a capacity under 600, there should be a minimum of six wheelchair spaces. This can include space created by removable seating. For venues or spaces with over 600 capacity, the number of wheelchair spaces should be at least 1% of the total capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Sightlines<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some events, like sing-along theatre shows, concerts, and sports, have audiences that stand up at times. Audiences often wish to show their enjoyment of a performance by a standing ovation. If the accessible viewing area isn\u2019t high enough, some access customers including wheelchair users may lose their view when the audience in front is standing. While this is not covered by <span title=\"Approved Document M (ADM)\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M (ADM)\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, <span title=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-name=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition=\"technical-guidance-document-m-tgd-m\" data-definition-id=\"8602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> requires you to anticipate&nbsp;and prepare for standing&nbsp;in these&nbsp;contexts. Make sure the accessible viewing areas is high enough to maintain sightlines over standing audiences, or provide seating at various levels. At a minimum, warn customers at the point of booking if there is no way to prevent loss of sightlines when audiences stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <span data-definition=\"accessible-stadia-guide\" data-definition-id=\"5634\" title=\"Accessible Stadia Guide\" data-definition-name=\"Accessible Stadia Guide\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> covers raked seating design for sightlines in more detail. It was written for spectator sports venues, but its guidance can be applied to many types of live event. Sport England\u2019s <span data-definition=\"accessible-and-inclusive-sports-facilities\" data-definition-id=\"5637\" title=\"Accessible and Inclusive Sports Facilities\" data-definition-name=\"Accessible and Inclusive Sports Facilities\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> also provides useful advice on spectator seating and sightlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a raised accessible viewing area or a cordoned area at ground level, some people who can stand may block the view for those behind them. A marked space at the back of the access area allows people to stand, lean, or perch. This setup helps ensure that everyone has a clear view and can use the access area in a way that suits them best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Access to general standing zones<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wheelchair users and those with mobility aids may want to be in the general standing area of an auditorium instead of on an accessible viewing platform. This should be permitted, if it meets Health and Safety guidance from a qualified assessor. For details on finding a Health and Safety Professional, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/event-safety\/faqs.htm\">Event Safety &#8211; Frequently asked questions &#8211; HSE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Other types of access seating<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Booking<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visitors may need different types of bookable access seating. These are often called \u2018<span data-definition=\"ambulant-accessible\" data-definition-id=\"5523\" title=\"Ambulant accessible\" data-definition-name=\"Ambulant accessible\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>\u2019 or \u2018ambulant disabled\u2019 options. Venues often encourage bookers to get in touch to discuss their specific needs. For more detail on communicating with audiences about seating types, see <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/customer-service\/planning-a-visit\/pre-event-access-information\/\">Customer Service 1.03 Pre-Event Access Information<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/customer-service\/planning-a-visit\/ticketing\/\">Customer Service 1.04 Ticketing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Design<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide a range of seating sizes and comfort or support options. The design of some access seating features is covered in <span title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. This includes providing information on backrests and armrests. Further information on seating heights, comfort, and support options, such as cushioning, is provided in <span title=\"BS8300\" data-definition-name=\"BS8300\" data-definition=\"bs8300\" data-definition-id=\"3603\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. Additionally, venues should provide extra legroom or space for an assistance dog. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seats should be designed to visually contrast with their surroundings, and row and seat numbers presented clearly and in large print.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very narrow rows and low seating might be a barrier for someone who doesn\u2019t usually need an adapted access seat. Following ADM regulations will make \u2018standard\u2019 rows of seating more accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For further information on standard seat heights and size of gaps between rows, refer to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technical-standards-for-places-of-entertainment.co.uk\/TS\/index.php?link=e4c06c615c461476e893842803fb714f#page=1\">Technical Standards for Places of Entertainment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some accessible design options are not covered by ADM but could be considered, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reclining seating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rocking or swinging seating, wobble cushions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>beanbags or floor cushions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>seats with tactile markings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>charging points for electric wheelchair users and mobility aids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>seat features such as cupholders, easy reach to tables for dining or notetaking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>safe, accessible spaces to stand, lean or perch rather than sit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>providing seat measurements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For some visitors, standing or perching is more comfortable than sitting due to their disability or access need. They may still need to be in an access area where other members of the public are less likely to knock into them. So, providing accessible standing areas is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Quantity<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While <span title=\"Ambulant\" data-definition-name=\"Ambulant\" data-definition=\"ambulant\" data-definition-id=\"3608\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> disabled people make up a larger share of the population than wheelchair users, there is currently no clear guidance on how many seats to provide for this group. You should offer a good range based on your venue&#8217;s size and layout. The <span data-definition=\"accessible-stadia-guide\" data-definition-id=\"5634\" title=\"Accessible Stadia Guide\" data-definition-name=\"Accessible Stadia Guide\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> states, \u201cit is\u2026essential that a reasonable approach is taken to determine the quality, numbers and dispersal.\u201d Offer choice and flexibility whenever possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Location<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide accessible location choices when possible. Describe the features of each seating area. Include details like whether there is <span title=\"Step-free\" data-definition-name=\"Step-free\" data-definition=\"step-free\" data-definition-id=\"5920\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> access or how many steps there are, along with handrails. Note how close they are to entrances, toilets, bars, or other facilities. Clearly state if seating is near a window, at the end of an aisle, or in bright or shaded lighting. Also, specify how close seating is to the stage and on what side it is for lip-reading or hearing. Indicate the view of the sign language interpreter or closed captions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other accessible seating options not covered by <span title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" data-definition-id=\"3602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or <span data-definition=\"technical-guidance-document-m-tgd-m\" title=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-name=\"Technical Guidance Document M (TGD M)\" data-definition-id=\"8602\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> can help venues enhance their practices. For instance, positioning seats near sound systems allows individuals to feel vibrations. Placing seats against a wall ensures that a person&#8217;s back is supported and there\u2019s no one behind them, as noted in <span title=\"PAS6463\" data-definition-name=\"PAS6463\" data-definition=\"pas6463\" data-definition-id=\"4716\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For each accessible seating area, check if it remains step-free during an emergency evacuation. For instance, if a lift cannot be used in a fire, make this clear. You should also describe how these seats would be evacuated in an emergency.
