These include <span title=\"Extended Reality (XR)\" data-definition-name=\"Extended Reality (XR)\" data-definition=\"extended-reality\" data-definition-id=\"4364\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, <span title=\"Virtual Reality (VR)\" data-definition-name=\"Virtual Reality (VR)\" data-definition=\"virtual-reality\" data-definition-id=\"4504\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, <span data-definition=\"augmented-reality\" data-definition-id=\"4312\" title=\"Augmented Reality (AR)\" data-definition-name=\"Augmented Reality (AR)\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, as well as other interactive tools. These are used to explore stories, create experiences, or reimagine access to collections and performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These technologies bring exciting opportunities but can also create new access barriers. VR and AR often depend on sight, sound, motion, or complex interfaces. This can exclude individuals with physical, cognitive or sensory processing differences. Many immersive environments lack accessibility features or alternatives for those who cannot access the core experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Planning for access from the start is crucial when creating immersive experiences. Whether the experience is in-person, browser-based, or app-led, accessibility should always be part of the creative process, not an afterthought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider accessibility for immersive experiences in the same way as you would for other events. That way, it can be built into immersive experiences wherever possible. You will need to consider who might not be able to use the core experience. Factor in alternative options for people to choose, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a low noise version<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a version with no fast movements or with no flashing lights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a self-guided, pause-able or seated option for experiences that involve movement or motion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Videos,<span data-definition=\"visual-guides\" data-definition-id=\"5433\" title=\"Visual guides\" data-definition-name=\"Visual guides\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or walkthroughs to give people a sense of the experience in advance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about how many \u2018ways in\u2019 there are, for example, will there be visual, audible, tactile or smell-based elements to the experience? Avoid relying on colour or flashing effects alone without alternatives or warnings. Use visual and audible cues together so that people have an alternative way in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make any text easy to read, scalable, and high contrast. Provide content summaries or walkthroughs for those who cannot or prefer not to engage directly with the immersive experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Environmental access<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide seating, clear signage, and staff support at in-person installations. Consider providing <span data-definition=\"relaxed-events\" data-definition-id=\"5426\" title=\"Relaxed events\" data-definition-name=\"Relaxed events\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> or sensory-adjusted visit times for in-person installations. The content is often viewed through phones or tablets.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Captions<\/h4><div><p>A text display of the spoken words and important sound elements of a performance or video. This is usually shown on a screen or caption unit, or integrated into the set so that people can follow along. Captions can be delivered by a captioner in the venue, or remotely. Captions can be pre-scripted or produced live depending on the type of event.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Extended Reality (XR)<\/h4><div><p>Extended Reality (XR) is a general term for using digital technologies like augmented reality or virtual reality to make an interactive or immersive experience.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Plain language<\/h4><div><p>A way of writing or speaking that is clear and simple and avoids jargon and hard words. Plain English or plain language helps everyone to understand information the first time they read it or hear it.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Relaxed events<\/h4><div><p>A performance, presentation or event that offers a warm welcome to anyone who needs to move, make noise or come and go. Often have adjustments to make them more accessible for people with sensory sensitivities (for example, lower sound levels, removal of very bright, intense or flashing lighting, low lighting left on in audience spaces, an introduction explaining what to expect).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Transcripts<\/h4><div><p>A written version of all speech, sounds, and visual content in a video. Supports a wide range of users, including screen reader users, and people who prefer reading.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Virtual Reality (VR)<\/h4><div><p>Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-generated environment that people can explore or interact with, usually using headsets or motion controllers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Visual guides<\/h4><div><p>This is a simple, clear document that uses words, pictures and icons to help people understand what to expect at an event, navigate around a space, or understand an idea or a process.
