For example, controls that don\u2019t work with a keyboard, captions that can\u2019t be turned on, or a lack of visible labels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creative and cultural organisations often host videos on platforms such as YouTube, Vimeo, or embedded website players. Each platform has its own accessibility limitations. Procuring a video player should be carefully thought through to ensure that the player you select will meet your users\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The points below highlight common access barriers that people experience when using video players and how to reduce them so that more people can watch, hear, and control video content in a way that works for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Keyboard access<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>all controls (for example play, pause, volume, full screen, captions) should be able to be used with only a keyboard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>focus should move logically from one control to the next, with visible focus indicators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Screen reader compatibility<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>buttons and controls must have meaningful labels (for example \u201cPlay video\u201d, not just \u201cButton\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>screen readers should announce the current status of the video, such as \u201cVideo paused\u201d or \u201c<span data-definition=\"captions\" data-definition-id=\"4323\" title=\"Captions\" data-definition-name=\"Captions\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>on\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Captions and audio features<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the player should allow users to turn <span data-definition=\"captions\" data-definition-id=\"4323\" title=\"Captions\" data-definition-name=\"Captions\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>on and off<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>if audio description is available, the player should support multiple audio tracks or linked versions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Visual accessibility<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>controls should be visible with strong colour contrast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>active states (e.g. a selected subtitle track) should be clearly indicated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>avoid auto-playing videos unless necessary, as people should be able to choose to play a video if they want to<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>if you must use a video that auto-plays, give the user the means to pause the video if they prefer to<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Transcripts and downloads<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>provide <span data-definition=\"transcripts\" data-definition-id=\"5434\" title=\"Transcripts\" data-definition-name=\"Transcripts\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>of videos directly below or next to the video, or link to it clearly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>if the video includes key information, provide a downloadable version or alternative text summary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Third party platforms (for example YouTube, Vimeo)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>choosing a third party platform or video player should be a carefully considered procurement process that takes account of the accessibility needs of your users \u2013 don&#8217;t just opt for platforms such as YouTube because you know them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>common third party players such as YouTube and Vimeo have reasonable accessibility features, but accessibility varies by embed style and customisation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>if using a custom player, test it with real users and people using a range of accessibility tools such as <span data-definition=\"screen-readers\" data-definition-id=\"5638\" title=\"Screen readers\" data-definition-name=\"Screen readers\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, <span data-definition=\"keyboard-navigation\" data-definition-id=\"4403\" title=\"Keyboard navigation\" data-definition-name=\"Keyboard navigation\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> and <span data-definition=\"accessibility-overlays\" data-definition-id=\"4290\" title=\"Accessibility overlays\" data-definition-name=\"Accessibility overlays\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>YouTube&#8217;s native player has accessibility limitations but can be improved by:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>adding <span data-definition=\"transcripts\" data-definition-id=\"5434\" title=\"Transcripts\" data-definition-name=\"Transcripts\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>and descriptive titles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>using playlist features for navigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>hosting video elsewhere if advanced accessibility features are needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While YouTube does present some barriers to users, it is so widely used that assistive technology users will often have learned how to navigate any barriers within the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"specification_table\" class=\"wp-block-ace-specification-table bg_white specification_table hide\"><h3>Standard &#8211; They apply third-party source code (typically JavaScript) to make improvements to the front-end code of the website.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Audio description<\/h4><div><p>Narration that describes visual elements of a live experience or video. Audio description describes important visual details such as costume, set, location, facial expressions, body language and actions.<\/p>\n<p>It can be delivered live through speakers or a headset to people at an event or show, or as a live or pre-recorded audio described tour (for example at a museum). It can also be integrated into the script of a play or a voiceover, or delivered by a character. In a digital context, such as cinema or video, it can be delivered as a separate audio track or integrated into a script or voiceover.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Captions<\/h4><div><p>A text display of the spoken words and important sound elements of a performance or video. This is usually shown on a screen or caption unit, or integrated into the set so that people can follow along. Captions can be delivered by a captioner in the venue, or remotely. Captions can be pre-scripted or produced live depending on the type of event.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Keyboard navigation<\/h4><div><p>Using the keys on a keyboard (like the arrow keys, Tab or Enter) to move around a website, document or app. People who cannot use a mouse may use keyboard navigation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Screen readers<\/h4><div><p><span class=\"EOP SCXW153709951 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">A software tool that reads out content from websites, documents, and applications, including alt text and image descriptions. Screen readers are often used by blind and visually impaired people, neurodiverse people, and others. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"ace-definition-item\"><h4>Transcripts<\/h4><div><p>A written version of all speech, sounds, and visual content in a video.
