The room is large enough to allow space for two assistants and has a non-slip floor.&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"key_considerations\" class=\"wp-block-ace-standard-key-considerations standard-key-considerations standard-content\"><h3>Key considerations for toilets<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\"><strong>Regular stalls toilets and self-contained units&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accessible toilets aren\u2019t the only ones used by disabled people. Ensure your standard provision toilets are, for example, well-lit and free from obstructions. This will make them usable for a range of disabled people as well. You can add features from accessible toilets, like lever taps, to standard ones. This way, more people can use them. This can take pressure off the accessible toilets and reduce their queues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\"><strong>Wheelchair accessible unisex toilets<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every venue should offer at least one wheelchair-accessible toilet when regular toilets are available. A wheelchair accessible unisex toilet is designed to be large enough for wheelchair users to access comfortably. Wheelchair accessible unisex toilets are not just for wheelchair users. Other disabled people, like those using a walking frame or with a stoma bag, may need these toilets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accessible toilets should be signposted with the <span data-definition=\"international-symbol-of-access\" title=\"International Symbol of Access\" data-definition-name=\"International Symbol of Access\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>. For signage placement and further details, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/allin.online\/standard\/built-environment\/moving-around\/signage-and-wayfinding\/\">Built Environment 3.01 Signage and Wayfinding<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doors should open outwards, where possible. If a door opens inwards, the space around it must be larger. This ensures a wheelchair user can access a 1.5 square metre turning space while opening or closing the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Locks and door handles should be easy to grip and possible to use with an open hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measurements stated in <span data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> and <span data-definition=\"bs8300\" title=\"BS8300\" data-definition-name=\"BS8300\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> refer to \u201cusable floor space\u201d. If there&#8217;s an obstruction in the space, like a wall or heating unit sticking out, don&#8217;t include that area in the measurement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your venue has more than one accessible toilet, you should offer a mix of toilets with right-handed and left-handed <span data-definition=\"transfer-space-wc\" title=\"Transfer space\" data-definition-name=\"Transfer space\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is vital that alarm cords hang low enough that they can be reached from the floor. This is so that a person who is on the floor can call for assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\"><strong>Ambulant cubicles&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span title=\"Ambulant\" data-definition-name=\"Ambulant\" data-definition=\"ambulant\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> cubicles are designed for people who can stand and walk to use the facility but need some supporting features. You may have seen an ambulant cubicle at the end of a row of regular cubicles.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key features include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>grab rails configured in an &#8216;L&#8217; shape<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>larger width than a standard cubicle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>visual contrast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>emergency release mechanisms for inward-opening doors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ambulant self-contained units (toilets which have the <span data-definition=\"wc\" title=\"WC\" data-definition-name=\"WC\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> and sink within one lockable room) also have these key features, but with a slightly different layout.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\"><strong>Changing Places toilets<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-definition=\"changing-places\" title=\"Changing Places [correct]\" data-definition-name=\"Changing Places [correct]\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>&nbsp;toilets&nbsp;are bigger than wheelchair-accessible ones. They offer extra space and features for anyone who needs help, like those with two assistants.&nbsp;Whether&nbsp;a Changing Places toilet is required by law at your venue depends on factors&nbsp;like&nbsp;visitor&nbsp;or&nbsp;seating capacity and total floor space.&nbsp;This is outlined in more detail in&nbsp;<span data-definition=\"approved-document-m-adm\" title=\"Approved Document M ADM\" data-definition-name=\"Approved Document M ADM\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Essential features include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>wide access door<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>height adjustable changing bench<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ceiling-track hoist system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span data-definition=\"transfer-space-wc\" title=\"Transfer space\" data-definition-name=\"Transfer space\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span> on both sides of the <span data-definition=\"wc\" title=\"WC\" data-definition-name=\"WC\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>height adjustable washbasin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>privacy screen or curtain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>waste disposal bin for incontinence products<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>non-slip flooring<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>emergency alarm system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>accessible controls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>grab rails<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There should be adequate space of at least 3m by 4m with a ceiling height of 2.4m.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shower facilities are optional but are recommended if your site expects longer stays.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-ace-heading\">Toilet fixtures<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important that all <span data-definition=\"fixtures-and-fittings\" title=\"Toilet fixtures and fittings\" data-definition-name=\"Toilet fixtures and fittings\" class=\"ace-definition-inserter\"><\/span>, such as grab rails, toilet bases and toilet seats, are firmly fixed to walls and floors. Loose toilet fixtures present a high risk of injury to disabled people, particularly when transferring on and off the toilet.
